John Paul Cooper, né à Middleton dans la banlieue de Manchester le 1er novembre 1983, s’intéresse au grunge dans sa jeunesse, joue de la guitare et forme un groupe de rock au collège. La découverte de la soul le conduit à changer de style. Il chante dans une chorale, se produit dans les bars et compose ses premières chansons. En 2012, il commence sa carrière par la sortie de trois EP disponibles en téléchargement. Il attire l’attention du public par sa participation au titre « Perfect Strangers » de Jonas Blue, qui se classe n°2 au Royaume-Uni en 2016. Cette année là sort son premier album Raised Under Grey Skies, qui se classe n°9 et connaît un grand succès grâce au titre original « September Song » (n°7), qui fait le tour des hit-parades européens. Six autres titres sortent séparément, dont « Passport Home », « She’s on My Mind » et le duo « Momma’s Prayers » avec le rappeur Stormzy. Il collabore aussi avec Friction pour le titre « Dancing » (2018), puis la chanteuse norvégienne Astrid S sur son succès « Sing it with Me » (2019).
JP Cooper is an English singer-songwriter from Manchester who began performing as a teenager and developed a style that blends soul and dance with pop. He released several EPs via digital download and won attention when he featured on Jonas Blue’s 2016 hit single ‘Perfect Strangers’, reaching number two on the UK Singles Chart and topping Billboard’s Dance Club Songs Chart. His own single ‘September Song’ (2016) also went to number two in the UK and reached number 38 on Billboard’s Adult Top 40. ‘Passport Home’ (2017) peaked at number 86 in the UK and ‘She’s On My Mind’ (2017) reached number 93. His debut album, ‘Raised Under Grey Skies’, went to number nine on the UK Albums Chart in 2017. He has also collaborated with Stormzy, Friction, Mali-Koa and Craig David.
