Au milieu des années 1960, la Yougoslavie se trouve au début d’un essor culturel et artistique. Si elle suit la tendance occidentale au départ, elle ne tarde pas à devenir culturellement indépendante grâce à une nouvelle génération de génies créatifs qui offrent un répertoire digne des plus grands succès américains et britanniques. Les moyens technologiques modestes sont compensés par l’originalité et la variété de styles provenant d’auteurs, compositeurs et interprètes exceptionnels. Les chansons créées durant ces années, jusqu’à la dissolution du pays en 1992, sont encore très écoutées aujourd’hui à travers les anciennes républiques, ainsi que la diaspora. Le spectacle The Great ex-Yu Songbook ouvre la fenêtre sur l’héritage musical d’un lieu et d’une époque avec une sélection de classiques réarrangés et interprétés par le jeune artiste originaire de Bosnie-Herzégovine Arslan Trtak. Né à Québec, Arslan a étudié pendant sept ans au Conservatoire de musique de Québec en guitare classique et a obtenu un DEC Technique au CNDF en guitare jazz/pop. Il est présentement en deuxième année de baccalauréat à l’Université Laval en Interprétation Jazz. Ses influences sont variées, allant de musique pop, folk ou traditionnelle de Bosnie-Herzégovine et des Balkans au blues, rock classique et jazz de l’Occident. Tout ce bagage musical contribue au développement d’un profil artistique qui lui est propre et unique en son genre. Fort de son expérience de tournée internationale avec la chanteuse Amira Medunjanin, il a pris le goût de la scène et désire partager sa vision de la musique avec le public. L’événement, qui prendra place dans l’ambiance feutrée de la Salle d’Youville, représente une occasion parfaite pour découvrir cet artiste émergent. La soirée sera également agrémentée par la présence de quelques invités. Son père, Kemal, assurera l’accompagnement à la guitare et chantera certaines chansons, alors que ses frères Harun et Jasen prendront en charge la section rythmique pour quelques numéros. Ensemble, les trois frères forment le groupe The Wrenne Brothers.

While initially following Western trends, it quickly developed a distinct cultural identity thanks to a new generation of creative geniuses who produced a repertoire rivaling the greatest American and British hits. Limited technological resources were offset by originality and a wide range of styles crafted by exceptional songwriters, composers, and performers. The songs created during this period, up until the country’s dissolution in 1992, are still widely listened to today throughout the former republics as well as within the diaspora. The Great ex-Yu Songbook opens a window onto the musical heritage of a place and an era, through a selection of classic songs reimagined and performed by young Bosnian-born artist Arslan Trtak. Born in Quebec City, Arslan studied classical guitar for seven years at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec and earned a DEC Technique at CNDF in jazz/pop guitar. He is currently in his second year of a bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance at Université Laval. His influences are wide-ranging, spanning pop, folk, and traditional music from Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Balkans, as well as Western blues, classic rock, and jazz. This rich musical background has helped shape a distinctive and truly unique artistic voice. Having gained international touring experience with singer Amira Medunjanin, Arslan developed a passion for the stage and now seeks to share his musical vision with audiences. This event, taking place in the intimate atmosphere of Salle d’Youville, offers a perfect opportunity to discover this emerging artist. The evening will also feature special guests. His father, Kemal, will accompany him on guitar and sing select songs, while his brothers Harun and Jasen will handle the rhythm section for several numbers. Together, the three brothers form the band The Wrenne Brothers.
