Lorsqu’ils ont fait leurs débuts au début des années 90, les infatigables rockeurs du Maryland, Clutch, mélangeaient des éléments de funk et de metal, inspirés par Faith No More et Led Zeppelin. Au fil des décennies, ils se sont construit un public fidèle grâce à des tournées incessantes et à des albums qui ont marqué la scène rock alternatif, notamment Clutch et The Elephant Riders à la fin des années 90, puis tout au long des années 2000. The Head and the Heart are an acclaimed indie folk band whose influences include Americana, country-rock, and classic Beatlesque pop. The band was formed in Seattle by a group of Northwestern transplants and broke into the mainstream in 2013 with the release of their sophomore outing, Let’s Be Still, which peaked at the number ten slot on the Billboard 200 and shot straight to the top of the U.S. Folk and Independent Albums charts. Subsequent efforts Signs of Light and Living Mirage reached the upper echelons of the U.S. and Canadian charts. In 2022, the band issued their fifth LP, Every Shade of Blue, which included the hit single of the same name. In October of 2024 they released « Arrow, » the first single from a forthcoming sixth album.

Arrivant une bonne décennie après l’apogée de la Britpop, The Kooks ont ravivé ce fracas accrocheur et plein de malice pour une génération légèrement plus tardive. Leur premier album, Inside In/Inside Out, est sorti en 2006, la même année que le premier album des Arctic Monkeys. Les deux groupes étaient peut-être de légers rivaux, mais leurs débuts quasi simultanés ont marqué la naissance d’une nouvelle génération de groupes britanniques à guitares, aussi redevables aux Strokes qu’au rock classique. Inside In/Inside Out a été un immense succès au Royaume-Uni, atteignant la deuxième place des charts avant d’obtenir le statut de quadruple disque de platine. Leur deuxième album, Konk, sorti en 2008, est entré directement à la première place des classements britanniques, mais est rapidement redescendu. Junk of the Heart, paru en 2011, n’a pas relancé leur succès, mais le quatuor a persévéré et fait son retour en 2014 avec Listen, un album élargissant leur palette sonore pour intégrer des influences soul, dance et new wave, tout en conservant leur amour pour la pop/rock britannique classique qui avait toujours été leur fondement. Arriving a good decade after the peak of Brit-pop, the Kooks revived that knowing, catchy clatter for a slightly later generation. Their debut, Inside In/Inside Out, appeared in 2006, the same year as the Arctic Monkeys’ debut. The two bands may have been mild rivals, but their near-simultaneous debuts represented the birth of a new generation of British guitar bands, one as indebted to the Strokes as to classic rock. Inside In/Inside Out was a major hit in the U.K., peaking at number two on its way to quadruple-platinum status. Konk, their 2008 sophomore album, entered the U.K. charts at number one but slid down rather quickly. 2011’s Junk of the Heart didn’t revive their fortunes, but the quartet stuck to it, re-emerging in 2014 with Listen, a record that broadened their sound to encompass soul, dance, and new wave while retaining their love of the classic British pop/rock that had always been at their foundation. The Kooks continued to pair spacious grooves with lush production on subsequent efforts Let’s Go Sunshine (2017) and 10 Tracks to Echo in the Dark (2022).

Peter Hook & The Light est un groupe anglais de post-punk, formé en mai 2010 par le bassiste et chanteur Peter Hook, ancien membre des groupes influents Joy Division et New Order. Ministry est l’un des groupes de rock industriel les plus influents et populaires, injectant de fortes doses d’agressivité punk et de riffs de guitare heavy metal tonitruants dans des rythmes électroniques chargés d’échantillons. Avant que Nine Inch Nails ne devienne grand public, Ministry a fait plus que tout autre groupe pour populariser le genre, séduisant les fans de metal et d’alternatif au-delà du cercle restreint des adeptes de l’industriel. Cela ne signifie pas pour autant que Ministry propose un son commercial ou accessible : leur musique est intensément abrasive, martelante et répétitive, avec une importance parfois égale accordée aux échantillons, synthétiseurs et effets sur bande qu’aux guitares et voix distordues. Cependant, que ce soit en studio ou sur scène, le groupe produit un son écrasant qui surpasse la plupart de ses contemporains des genres musicaux agressifs. De plus, le fondateur et leader Al Jourgensen confère au groupe une aura plus stylisée et théâtrale que d’autres groupes industriels, souvent plus anonymes en comparaison avec son look de cowboy/biker vêtu de cuir et les tactiques choc de vidéos comme « N.W.O. » et « Just One Fix ». Ministry is one of the most influential and popular industrial rock groups, injecting large doses of punky, over-the-top aggression and roaring heavy metal guitar riffs into sample-heavy electronic rhythms. Until Nine Inch Nails crossed over to the mainstream, Ministry did more than any other band to popularize the genre, finding favor with metal and alternative audiences outside of industrial’s cult fan base. That’s not to say Ministry have a commercial or generally accessible sound: they are unremittingly intense, abrasive, pounding, and repetitive, and not always guitar-oriented (samples, synthesizers, and tape effects are a primary focus just as often as guitars and distorted vocals). However, both live and in the studio, they achieve a huge, crushing sound that puts most of their contemporaries in aggressive musical genres to shame; plus, founder and frontman Al Jourgensen gives the group a greater aura of style and theater than other industrial bands, who seem rather faceless when compared with Jourgensen’s leather-clad cowboy/biker look and the edgy shock tactics of such videos as « N.W.O. » and « Just One Fix. » Ministry started in the early 1980s as a synth pop band, with the goth club classic « (Every Day Is) Halloween » pointing to the darker, more aggressive direction their music would soon take. 1992’s platinum-selling Psalm 69 represented the peak of Ministry’s popularity, and the band’s sound moved closer to metal with the 1996 follow-up Filth Pig and 2004’s Houses of the Molé, one of several albums aimed specifically at then-President George W. Nils Frahm est un compositeur et musicien allemand dont le travail mêle instruments acoustiques et électroniques, avec une prédilection pour le piano et les synthétiseurs. Il a également exploré l’électro expérimentale au sein du trio Nonkeen et collaboré avec des artistes comme F.S. Blumm, Anne Müller, Ólafur Arnalds et DJ Shadow.
