Chanel Beads – Your Day Will Come

· by Stephan Boissonneault

Chanel Beads (the experimental dream pop project of New York’s Shane Lavers) released the debut album, Your Day Will Come, back in 2024, and is now following it up two years later with another album, also called Your Day Will Come. Naming your album under the same title as your other one is funny for two reasons—One: It kind of takes the piss out of all music industry standards. Two: It’s confusing, but also a really good way to have new fans discover all of your work by looking up one title. I, for one, needed to listen to the first one after checking out the newest Your Day Will Come.

This record trades the scrappy, lo-fi churn of earlier Chanel Beads for something more patient and spacious. The guitars still fray at the edges liek they’re being pulled apart, but there’s more room to breathe between the noise — hooks arrive later, hit harder when they do, especially on “The Coward Forgets His Nightmare.” Vocals sit low in the mix, half-buried under tape hiss and reverb, giving the whole thing a hushed, private feel. The drums are loose, almost conversational, never locking into anything too tidy on tracks like “Drums Only” and “Silver Cup.”

Your Day Will Come is a pretty easy listening experience that has enough eccentricities to separate it from cookie-cutter dream pop. Where a lot of shoegaze-adjacent guitar music leans on volume for catharsis, this album finds its tension in quiet — repetition that builds dread instead of just texture.
