La virtuosité pianistique de Rachmaninov était légendaire et elle transparaît particulièrement dans son Concerto n^o 3 avec lequel Marie-Ange Nguci, étoile montante du piano, fera ses débuts à l’OSM. S’inspirant des folklores irlandais, écossais et anglais, Beach rend hommage à la diversité des cultures étatsuniennes dans sa symphonie «Gaélique». Avec cette œuvre aux teintes orchestrales chatoyantes, Beach s’affirme comme compositrice d’envergure.

Rachmaninoff’s pianistic virtuosity was legendary, a fact he made markedly obvious in his Piano Concerto no. 3, in which rising star Marie-Ange Nguci will make her OSM debut. Drawing on Irish, Scottish, and English folklore, Amy Beach’s Gaelic Symphony celebrates an array of diverse cultural legacies in the United States, and with this sumptuously orchestrated work she established herself as a composer of stature.

Gala du centenaire d’Oscar Peterson : Canadiana Suite, avec l’Oscar Peterson Centennial Quartet et Jazz Orchestra sous la direction de John Clayton.
Dans le même édifice où le grand Oscar Peterson a donné son dernier concert inoubliable à Montréal, 21 ans plus tard, le Festival International de Jazz de Montréal et les coproducteurs Jim Doxas et Céline Peterson commémoreront fièrement le 100^e anniversaire de Peterson avec une soirée de musique célébrant la carrière de près de sept décennies de l’un des trésors nationaux les plus aimés du Canada.
L’Oscar Peterson Centennial Quartet – Robi Botos, Mike Downes, Jocelyn Gould et Jim Doxas – ouvrira la soirée avec des sélections tirées du vaste catalogue de musique originale de Peterson, ainsi que quelques standards de jazz que les fans d’OP écoutent depuis des décennies. Après cette prestation, l’OPCQ sera rejoint par l’Oscar Peterson Centennial Jazz Orchestra et son directeur invité spécial, le bassiste, compositeur, arrangeur et chef d’orchestre John Clayton, lauréat d’un GRAMMY. La Maison symphonique sera ensuite remplie des sons de la bien-aimée Canadiana Suite de Peterson (arrangée par John Clayton), qui célèbre elle-même son 60^e anniversaire cette année.
La soirée se terminera par un concert final très spécial et la remise du prix Oscar Peterson de cette année par Céline Peterson et un invité surprise.

In the same building where the great Oscar Peterson performed his last unforgettable concert in Montreal, 21 years later, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal and co-producers Jim Doxas and Céline Peterson will proudly commemorate the occasion of Peterson’s 100^th birthday with a full evening of music celebrating the nearly 7-decade career of one of Canada’s most beloved national treasures.
Featuring a performance from the Oscar Peterson Centennial Quartet — Robi Botos, Mike Downes, Jocelyn Gould, and Jim Doxas — the evening will open with selections from Peterson’s extensive catalogue of original music as well as a few of the jazz standards that OP fans have been listening to for decades. Following this performance, the OPCQ will be joined by the Oscar Peterson Centennial Jazz Orchestra and very special guest director, GRAMMY Award-winning bassist, composer, arranger, and bandleader John Clayton. Maison symphonique will then be filled with the sounds of Peterson’s beloved Canadiana Suite (arr. John Clayton), which itself is celebrating its 60^thanniversary this year.
The evening will conclude with a very special finale performance and the presentation of this year’s Oscar Peterson Award from Céline Peterson and a surprise guest.

Depuis les années 50, s’adaptant aux époques et toujours avec le même succès, le kompa encapsule le romantisme haitien dans des groove stylés où les synthétiseurs dictent le tempo, sans perdre la trace du merengue et du twoubadou. Sous l’impulsion de Jean Wesly et Duckens Fils, Baz Konpa déroule une solide prestation aux rythmes langoureux des bals de la Perle des Antilles, de ceux qui font agréablement tourner la tête!

Since the ’50s, always in step with the times and never losing any of its appeal, konpa has been encapsulating Haitian Romanticism in styled rhythms where synthesizers dictate the tempo while maintaining the méringue and twoubadou groove. À 25 ans, le chanteur, auteur-compositeur et producteur originaire de Staten Island, Louis Attillio Vigorito, mieux connu sous le nom de Louyah, a prouvé que sa polyvalence en tant qu’artiste le distingue de manière unique. Élevé dans le sud du New Jersey, Louyah a fait ses débuts musicaux en tant que vocaliste et guitariste des groupes de metal Premonition et Idle Minds. Après six années passées en tant que membre de groupe, il a décidé de se lancer dans une carrière solo. En 2020, il a sorti son premier album studio intitulé Smile For Me, suivi de son EP VIRGO la même année, sous le label indépendant Loud Era Records. Plutôt que de se concentrer sur un seul genre, la musique de Louyah intègre un mélange éclectique de sons fusionnant pop, rock, rap et éléments R&B.

At 25 years young, Staten Island-born singer-songwriter and producer, Louis Attillio Vigorito or better known as Louyah, has proved that his versatility as an artist has established himself as, unlike any other. Raised in south New Jersey, Louyah entered the music scene as a vocalist and guitarist of metal bands Premonition and Idle Minds. After six years as a bandmember, he pursued a solo career. In 2020 he released his debut studio album titled Smile For Me, followed by his EP titled, VIRGO, within the same year through independent record label, Loud Era Records. Rather than specifying on one genre, Louyah’s music incorporates an eclectic mix of sounds fusing pop, rock, rap, and R&B elements.

Festival International Nuits d’Afrique : Les Mamans du Congo x Rrobin à la scène Loto-Québec

“Instruments percussifs, ustensiles de cuisine, pulsations électroniques, bass music et afrobeats portent les chœurs et le rap des chanteuses” (FIP, 2023). Gladys Samba, charismatique meneuse au franc-parler et au rire explosif de ce groupe afro-féministe hors du commun, acclamé par le public et les médias du monde entier, défend avec ferveur et conviction la place des femmes dans la société, au point d’utiliser des batteries de casseroles comme percussions. Tout un message! Associant de manière truculente tendres berceuses bantoues, sages préceptes du matrimoine congolais, chants ancestraux aux ponctuations hip hop et rythmes rapides et syncopés d’une électro concoctée par le producteur Rrobin, la musique des Mamans du Congo ne laisse personne indifférent.

“Percussions, kitchen utensils, electronic rhythms, bass and afro-beats help carry the choruses and rap vocals of these female artists” (FIP, 2023). Led by the candid and charismatic Gladys Samba, this extraordinary afro-feminist group, hailed by audiences and media around the world, fervently defends women’s place in society, underscored by their use of kitchen tools as percussion instruments. What a powerful message! Their potent mix of tender Bantu lullabies, wise teachings of Congolese women, ancestral chants punctuated by hip hop rhythms and fast, syncopated electro beats concocted by producer Rrobin, it’s impossible not to be moved by these inspiring mamas of the Congo.

Festival International Nuits d’Afrique : Blaiz Fayah à la scène TD

C’est un véritable phénomène. Ses sons se propagent à une vitesse folle sur les Internets. « Des basses programmées, lourdes, profondes, qui remplissent l’espace, un côté épuré et “un peu sale”, sur un BPM “pas trop élevé” » (RFI, 2023): l’infatigable Blaiz Fayah est le chef de file et un puriste du shatta, ce dérivé tout martiniquais du dancehall jamaïcain, qui remue les tripes. On décèle toutefois par-ci par là dans ses productions hyper codifiées des accents zouk et kompa qui leur donnent une allure sulfureuse. Sur scène, ça explose de partout, alors que le DJ s’enjaille avec ses musiciens et ses danseuses, entraînant le public à sa suite. En tournée internationale, il présente son album tout frais, Shatta Ting.

Blaiz Fayah is a true marvel and his music is spreading all over the internet like wildfire. “The deep and heavy programmed bass, clean but kind of badass too, fills the space at a ‘not too high’ BPM” (RFI, 2023). This tireless artist is king and a purist when it comes to shatta, a completely Martinican subgenre of Jamaican dancehall that really stirs the soul. In his super-codified creations, though, you can sometimes pick out subtle hints of zouk and kompa, making them all the more tantalizing. On stage, everyone goes wild as the DJ gets down with his musicians and dancers, drawing the audience into the party. Blaiz Fayah is currently on a world tour to showcase his brand-new album, Shatta Ting.

Festival International Nuits d’Afrique : Less Toches Vallenato avec Remberto Zuniga au Balattou

Leur cumbia toute montréalaise, agitée des vibrations culturelles si propre à la métropole, est pourtant inscrite dans les gènes de ces cinq musiciens originaires du Mexique, de la Colombie, de Cuba et de l’Argentine. Combinant avec malice l’accordéon, la guacharaca, les percussions afro-colombiennes et la basse, ce groupe latin alternatif, lauréat des Syli d’or 2024, amène les cumbia sabanera, cumbia rebajada, cumbia villera et cumbia mexicana sur les dance floor, expérimentant un folklore de village à la fois poétique et festif, qui aspire à la vie et à la liberté.
Trois concerts, trois invités, trois ambiances. La variété et le dynamisme de la musique colombienne seront à l’honneur lors de cette série Étoiles.
Vallenato | avec Remberto Zúñiga: Le Vallenato rassemble les amis et les familles lors des fêtes populaires. C’est un plongeon dans le riche folklore du nord de la Colombie, à la croisée des influences autochtones, africaines et européennes, qu’offrira ce spectacle cousu autour de ce rythme traditionnel “né dans la vallée”, inscrit au Patrimoine culturel immatériel de l’Unesco depuis 2015.

Although their unique style of cumbia is imbued with Montreal’s cultural vibes, this genre is in the DNA of the five musicians who hail from Mexico, Colombia, Cuba and Argentina. Playfully mixing accordion, bass, guacharaca and other Afro-Colombian percussion instruments, this alternative Latin band, winners of the Syli d’or 2024, bring different styles of cumbia—Mexicana, rebajada, sabanera and villera—to the dance floor, while they experiment with poetic and festive village folk traditions that embrace life and freedom.
Three concerts, three guests, three flavours. The diversity and vitality of Colombian music will be in the spotlight during this Étoiles series.
Vallenato | with Remberto Zúñiga: Vallenato brings family and friends together at local fiestas. This show is a deep dive into the rich musical heritage of northern Colombia, where indigenous, African and European folk traditions come together, and centres around this “born in the valley” music genre, declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2015.

Festival International Nuits d’Afrique : Stogie T au Balattou

Légende du hip hop sud-africain, Stogie T se positionne depuis 20 ans comme un électron libre. “Il n’hésite pas à tendre un miroir à l’ensemble de la société, et le reflet est toujours plus complexe que les clichés bien-pensants du «rap conscient» et la nature stéréotypée et banale du «rap commercial»” (RFI, 2024). Adroit parolier et anatomiste du peuple, Stogie T a le sens inné tant de la poésie que du verbe acéré. Spoken word, battle rap, street rap: Stogie-T est partout et nulle part. Il renie les étiquettes et s’enorgueillit d’être un cas à part de la culture hip hop. Dans son récent EP, Shallow, son flow direct est rehaussé par un son lo-fi sans fioriture.

Now a South African hip hop legend, Stogie T has positioned himself over the past 20 years as a kind of free electron. “He doesn’t hesitate to hold a mirror up to society and its reflection is always more complex than the self-righteous clichés of ‘conscious rap’ and the banal stereotypes of ‘commercial rap’” (RFI, 2024). A clever wordsmith and astute observer of people, Stogie T possesses a natural flair for both poetry and wit. Spoken word, battle or street rap, Stogie-T is at once anywhere and everywhere. He rejects labels and takes pride in being a maverick in the hip hop world. His recent EP, Shallow, highlights his clean flow, heightened by an unembellished lo-fi sound.

Jean Jean Roosevelt a ce petit quelque chose de doux et de chaleureux qui fait de lui un chanteur Folk-pop fort apprécié. Ce compositeur, guitariste et percussionniste, médaille d’or au concours de chanson des Jeux de la Francophonie 2013 et actuel ambassadeur de l’Unicef, signe, en français et en créole, des textes léchés et accrocheurs, sincères et positifs, engagés et empreints d’humanité, par lesquels il prône la paix, la tolérance, la justice sociale et l’unité. Ses chansons, sensibles et inclusives, sont relevées par une pléthore de rythmes issus des traditions vodou haïtiennes comme les Nago, Yanvalouet, Kongo,Ibo, Rabòday ou Djouba, jumelés à des mélodies entraînantes à saveur de R&B, de reggae et d’afrobeat. Flavia Coelho a rempli l’Olympia de Paris en mars dernier. Sans aucun doute elle fera un succès de son spectacle en ouverture de cette 39ème édition du Festival international Nuits d’Afrique. S’émancipant de tous les stéréotypes, l’irradiante et insaisissable chanteuse, autrice et compositrice fait offrande de mélodies rayonnantes. Suave, elle joue parfaitement la carte de la langueur enveloppante aussi bien que celle de la gaieté communicative, s’amusant à allier avec élégance les samba, bossa-nova, pagode et forró du Nordeste aux reggae, amapiano, G-funk et house.
