Nuits d’Afrique présente Femi Kuti & The Positive Force

La portion extérieure gratuite du Festival va s’amorcer sur les chapeaux de roue avec, en tête d’affiche, Femi Kuti, six fois nominé aux Grammy Awards (dont deux fois en 2022) ! Porteur de tout un héritage, le digne fils du légendaire Fela fait résonner aux quatre coins de la planète, depuis plus de trois décennies, l’hypnotique Afrobeat créé par son père. Ses spectacles, généreux, énergiques et dansants, respectent l’intégrité de cet excitant genre musical alliant Funk et Jazz aux traditionnels Juju et Highlife nigérians, supporté par une orchestration monstre où les longues envolées des cuivres et les ondes exaltées des percussions se disputent la vedette. Il sera accompagné de son fils Mádé Kuti pour une soirée Afrobeat multigénérationnelle.

The Festival’s free outdoor programming will get a jump-start with headliner Femi; six-time Grammy nominees (twice in 2022)! Worthy bearer of an impressive legacy, the son of the legendary Fela Kuti has continued to make his father’s signature Afrobeat resonate hypnotically around the world for over three decades. Energetic and generous, his shows are a testament to this exuberant musical genre that combines funk and jazz with Nigerian highlife and traditional juju, backed by his monumental band with its soaring sounds of the brass and exultant waves of percussion instruments contending for the spotlight. His son Mádé Kuti will also be performing making it a truly multigenerational Afrobeat evening.

Veeby’s voice, ever fluid, energetic and flamboyant, soars to the summits and then plunges, only to soar again, tirelessly. A combination of jazz, hip-hop and soul with strong African overtones, her latest album, Sandj, is featured on the playlist of Couleurs Tropicales, a long-running RFI radio show dedicated to African music, where it is described as a hymn to freedom, a tribute to emancipation in all its forms.

Nuits d’Afrique présente Kabey Konate et Farafina Roots

N’est pas n’importe qui qui fait les premières parties d’Alpha Blondy et de Tiken Jah Fakoly ! Le Reggae du charismatique Kabey Konate, établi à Montréal depuis 2017, est ponctué de sonorités traditionnelles mandingues qui lui donnent une saveur particulière, celle d’être imprégné par la sagesse des anciens. Celui qui se définit comme le Griot du Reggae offre des prestations hautes en couleur, ses propos engagés pour la paix et l’unité étant portés par un enthousiasme contagieux, par l’entrain et la gaieté dans sa voix. L’an dernier, à l’occasion du 35e Festival international Nuits d’Afrique, il a composé une chanson hommage à l’événement avec les artistes Kayiri et King Shadrock.

It’s not just anyone who gets to be the opening act for the likes of Alpha Blondy or Tiken Jah Fakoly! The reggae style of this charismatic musician, who has been living in Montreal since 2017, is punctuated with Mandinka rhythms, giving it a unique flavour—that of being steeped in the wisdom of the Old Ones. Considered the griot of reggae, Kabey Konate delivers an extremely colourful performance, while his lyrics advocating unity are carried by the infectious enthusiasm in his voice and his spirited joyful presence. Last year, Konate, along with artists Kayiri and King Shadrock, composed and performed a song in honour of Nuits d’Afrique’s 35th anniversary.

Le Festival Nuits d’Afrique présente Okan

« La musique cubaine est très riche et elle a beaucoup à offrir, pas seulement de la Salsa, du Reggaeton ou de la musique traditionnelle ». Cette prémisse guide la démarche artistique d’Elizabeth Rodriguez et de Magdelys Savigne, les audacieuses fondatrices d’Okan, respectivement violoniste et percussionniste virtuoses. Afin que des genres musicaux comme les Pilón, Danzón et Música Guajira ne tombent pas dans l’oubli, que la culture afro-cubaine reste vivante, Okan sublime leur âme en y adjoignant de riches agencements aux accents antillais, africains, Flamenco, Boléro, Salsa, Jazz latin et classique. Leur dernier album, Espiral, a remporté le Juno de l’album de musique du monde 2021.

“Cuban music is very rich and it has a lot of things to offer, not only salsa, reggaeton, or traditional Cuban music.” This belief is what has guided the artistic journey of Elizabeth Rodriguez, virtuoso violinist, and Magdelys Savigne, percussionist, both founding members of Okan. To keep the Afro-Cuban culture alive and ensure that such styles as Pilón, Danzón and Música Guajira don’t fall by the wayside, they are breathing new life into these musical genres by introducing sublime arrangements that combine the rich accents of Caribbean, African, flamenco, bolero, salsa, Latin jazz and classical music. Their latest album, Espiral, won a Juno for World Music Album of the Year.

Le Festival Nuits d’Afrique présente Emde

De « riches chansons, exécutées avec énergie et confiance » (Le Devoir, 2019). Son instrument à 15 cordes, qu’il nomme « bahouinou » (les cordes d’un homme), entre la kora et le n’goni, EMDE l’a façonné de ses propres mains. Le blues mandingue qu’il en tire habilement, brodé de nuances Jazz, Funk et Reggae, souligne parfaitement la douce voix du jeune griot, descendant Bwa. Également percussionniste, le lauréat du Syli d’or de la musique du monde en 2019 use tout aussi adroitement des tamani, djembé, dunduns, calebasse, karinyan, filen et autre yabara. Une expérience musicale immersive au cœur du Mali.

His 15-string instrument, which he made himself and calls the “bahouinou” (the strings of a man), is something between a kora and a ngoni. The Mandinka blues EMDE plays, woven from jazz, funk and reggae, perfectly accompanies the soft voice of this young griot of Bwa ancestry. And this grand winner of the 2019 Syli d’or de la musique du monde is also a percussionist who is just as adept when playing the tamani, djembe, dundun, calabash, karinyan, filen and yaraba. His is music that brings you straight to the musical heart of Mali.

Natif de Montréal, The Holy, né Olivier Lamontagne, est en passe de devenir le prochain grand exportateur de la ville.

Son style unique, avant-gardiste et empreint de nostalgie rave industrielle des années 90 lui a permis de se produire aux côtés d’artistes tels que Mall Grab, Franky Rizardo et Sofi Tukker dès le début de sa carrière de DJ.

Montreal native The Holy, born Olivier Lamontagne is quickly ascending the city’s next biggest export.

His unique avant-garde sound filled with 90’s industrial rave nostalgic undertones scored him gigs alongside acts such as Mall Grab, Franky Rizardo and Sofi Tukker early on in his time as a club DJ.

Naxx Bitota at Festival Nuits d’Afrique

Nuits d’Afrique presents Kizaba at Fairmount Theater

Quand Daft Punk et David Guetta rencontrent Papa Wemba et Zaiko Langa Langa. Ordinateur dans une main, percussions traditionnelles dans l’autre, l’auteur, compositeur et multi-instrumentiste Lionel Kizaba se positionne comme le digne descendant de la Société des ambianceurs et des personnes élégantes (SAPE), un mouvement à la fois culturel et social congolais qui a connu plusieurs vies et rappelle à quel point le monde est en quête de repère, comme le souligne Alain Mabanckou. Se réappropriant les traditions avec style, en proposant une musique Afro-électro aux mélodies accrocheuses et funky, Kizaba, qui a étudié le Jazz à l’Institut national des arts de Kinshasa, échantillonne à sa manière le mouvement afro-futuriste.

Daft Punk/David Guetta meets Zaiko Langa Langa/Papa Wemba. Computer in one hand, some kind of drum in the other, the singer-songwriter-composer and multi-instrumentalist Lionel Kizaba considers himself a son of La SAPE —“Société des ambianceurs et des personnes élégantes,” literally the “Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People”—a Congolese movement, as cultural as it is social, that has had several incarnations, a reminder that we are all in search of some kind of benchmark, as writer and academic Alain Mabanckou has wisely noted. Kizaba, who studied Jazz at the Kinshasa National Institute of Arts, reclaims African traditions with a personal flair, delivering an Afro-electro sound with catchy, funky melodies as he takes on Afrofuturism in his own way.

Empreinte des sons tantôt feutrés, tantôt énergiques, qu’elle tire d’une vaste gamme de percussions brésiliennes telles que les pandeiro, alfaia et zabumba, la musique de Lara Klaus agence divinement les rythmes de sa région natale du nord-est du Brésil, la Soul américaine et les intonations afro-latines.

“Remarkably versatile, she can switch from guitar to drums while singing the music that she or others have composed.” (Le Devoir, 2021). In 2021, Lara Klaus earned Silver at the Syli de la musique du monde as well as the Conseil des arts de Montréal’s Coup de cœur prize. Imbued with both muted and energetic beats, which she draws from a wide range of Brazilian percussion instruments such as the pandeiro, alfaia and zabumba, Lara Klaus’s music divinely combines rhythms from her native northeastern Brazil with American soul and Afro-Latin inflections.
