Wiz Khalifa – Multiverse

· by CCJ Gabriel

With a combination of more than 20 albums, EPs, and mixtapes to his name, Wiz Khalifa’s Multiverse may be his best studio project, artistically, yet. Right off the bat with “Big Daddy Wiz,” Khalifa flexes some vocal range in auto-tune, an unexpected and pleasant delight, showcasing the evolution in his music. Multiverse as a whole is way funkier and poppy than anything else he has ever done. Including lots of guitar strings and old-school synth sounds and drums throughout the production, the album is not shy in sharing Wiz’s delicious rhymes and flows either. Falling deeper into the throwback funk riffs and 90’s style hip-hop noises, Wiz is truly the Snoop Dogg of our generation.

Wiz uses tune on basically every track on Multiverse, and he does so exceptionally well. Seemingly searching for someone who can understand and vibe with his position in life, the songs “1000 Women” and “High Maintenance” express Wiz’s more grown approach to finding love.

Most tracks on the album are quite short and based on production alone and you feel like you want them to just keep going, but with 17 quality tracks, the album feels whole and does not leave anything to be desired. It is perfect for the modern attention span. “Bad Ass Bitches” turns the album from a love story into straight club energy, followed by the song “Iced Out Necklace”, a gully, rap-heavy, braggadocious interlude. One of Multiverse’s strongest points was the eight-minute-long “We Don’t Go Out To Nightclubs Anymore/Candlelight Girl.” It takes you through a story of pianos, chimes, nature noises, and melodies before breaking down into something that sounds like your grandmother used to play on vinyl.

“Homies” is also essential listening for any rap or hip-hop head. Starting off as spoken word poetry over church organs and a choir, this absolutely beautiful and creative song turns into hard-hitting rhymes about friends who have passed and friends that are still here. Name-dropping iconic industry names and childhood friends, and doing so with class and extreme elegance, music like this is what solidifies Wiz as a true gem in hip-hop.
