Cellist Isang Enders presents an original and personal work, a journey through a carefully chosen repertoire of French music. On the program, works by the sisters Lili and Nadia Boulanger, by Marin Marais, Claude Debussy, Olivier Messiaen, and Igor Stravinsky. Each of the twelve pieces has been approached in order to bring out the timbre of the instrument that best suits the subject. The cello in the Marais pieces thus sounds like a viol, and the interpretation of Debussy’s works is “flute-like”, imbued with suppleness and lightness. Enders, who in places presents his own arrangements, calls on the musicians Sunwook Kim (piano), Sean Shibe (guitar), Mischa Meyer (cello) and Joachim Enders (harmonium). An album that is not aimed at purists, but at an audience charmed by nice sounds, and ready to discover the performer-arranger’s voice.
