Linda Catlin Smith, a staple Canadian composer, follows in the footsteps of Morton Feldman, with whom she studied: her writing focuses on the birth and extinction of sound. Thus, each musical motif is always carefully chosen, subtly varied and skillfully repeated. The album Thought and Desire, carried by pianist Eve Egoyan, is a testimony to this introspective sensitivity. Its three pieces, “Nocturnes and Chorales”, “Thought and Desire” and “The Underfolding”, offer a delicate world in which it’s possible to enjoy each musical intervention. A must-have in piano music.
