Even though 2024 is here, I wouldn’t want to overlook this high-quality album released at the very end of 2023. Businessless by Sick Boss is like GYBE! in a more condensed, detailed form. A sextet that plays heavy rock, with steady rhythms in support, but with more sparkle in the sonic textures that soar over the whole. Straightforward melodies mingle with waves of electronic noise, textural string counterpoint and occasional bursts of sparkling trumpet. A delightful meeting of avant-garde instrumental rock, improvisation and contemporary art music. Genuine Montreal Sound, but from Vancouver.
