From Montreal, Sophia Bel launches a second Princess of the Dead EP, in which she expresses herself in English and French. Before the young singer and beatmaker got together with the Bonsound label, her Vol. 1 had already accumulated 600,000 listens on Spotify since April 2019. It’s still far too early to compare this unexpected impact to that of Grimes, but these signs don’t lie: Bel’s power of attraction is clearly demonstrable. These pop songs are tinkered with by a young artist with obvious talent, the forms are respected, the assemblages of styles vary from rock to breakbeat through drum & bass and trip-hop but, roughly speaking, it’s clearly indie pop on the vocal and catchiness side. The artists CRi and Félix Bélisle (Choses Sauvages) also had a hand in the mix, which shows the present and future interest in Sophia Bel! Rather generic for now? Yes, but nevertheless promising. What happens next will be crucial.
