The appreciation of Morton Feldman’s music is something to be earned. It is indeed necessary to get familiarized with its economy and its duration, which are disconcerting on a first listen. “Piano and String Quartet” is his most accessible and enchanting piece, and the Smith Quartet and John Tilbury’s interpretation its most successful. Perhaps because it is the slowest, but also because of the exquisite delicacy of the pianist’s touch. Pure bliss in a state of weightlessness. It’s combined here with the immense “For John Cage”, with its bewitching tonal ambiguity. (On DVD, the duration of each piece exceeds that of the CD version.)
