Eleven years after his retirement, Alfred Brendel was found performing Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor. Recorded in front of a live audience, this session once again revealed the brilliance and infallible technique of Brendel’s playing, but also an interpretation the drive of which surpassed the pianist’s previous versions. Moreover, Live in Vienna includes Brendel’s only performance of Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, composed by Johannes Brahms. As expected, this is an interpretation worthy of the greatest, a must-have on your record shelf — or your hard drive.
