Ivy League intellectual (Brown University) and artist Jamila Woods has conducted brilliant research in order to circumscribe her African origins, to clarify her Black identity in North America, and to affirm a feminism adapted to the African-American condition of our time. Fascinated by all the music that has marked this identity, she has also built her own persona as a singer and aesthetic leader, to which two excellent studio albums testify. On Legacy! Legacy!, the most recent, each song is dedicated to a prominent personality of Black American culture, and Woods succeeds in thwarting the traps of pomp, grandiloquence, and high-flown intellectualism.
