Jordan Hamilton – Project Freedom

Jordan Hamilton est violoncelliste. Il habite la petite ville universitaire de Kalamazoo au Michigan, entre Detroit et Chicago. Project Freedom est sa sixième offrande discographique. 

Cet artiste black constitue une étrange bibitte musicale. Avec son violoncelle, il a fait de la musique instrumentale plutôt expérimentale; avec parallèlement, des participations à des groupes de jazz. Mais il est aussi attiré par le hip-hop. Par-dessus tout, il adore créer des sons étranges et pas très orthodoxes en branchant son instrument favori dans toutes sortes de machines synthétiques et électroniques. 

Project Freedom est un mélange de tout cela : quinze pièces plutôt courtes, qui nous emmènent dans différents univers, avec une sonorité très personnelle. Graduellement, nous passons d’une atmosphère méditative à des musiques plus dansantes, pour ensuite revenir à la lenteur à la fin. 

Au milieu du disque, on entend une prière à la déesse indienne Kali, un hommage instrumental au joueur de baseball Jackie Robinson, ainsi qu’un échange téléphonique avec un ami canadien, qui fait état de son inquiétude face à l’élection présidentielle de novembre. 

Tout n’est pas parfait. Jordan Hamilton est à son meilleur quand il utilise au maximum son violoncelle. Mais, comme dirait un collègue, « c’est de la belle ouvrage ». Les couches de violoncelle multipliées donnent souvent des résultats étonnants. Un violoncelle qui sonne parfois comme un accordéon, comme un clavier, comme des cuivres électroniques, ou comme… un violoncelle. S’ajoutent à cela des percussions et les voix de Jordan Hamilton. 

Si vous voulez entendre de la musique plus instrumentale, je vous suggère l’album Tri Magi par Jordan Hamilton, The Lasso et The Saxquatch de 2021, qui donne davantage franchement dans le jazz. 

Le jeune homme de Kalamazoo pique vraiment notre curiosité. Qui a dit qu’il n’y avait que des usines de voitures au Michigan ? En passant, on y trouve plus d’une centaine de vignobles. Et une gouverneure démocrate qui ferait éventuellement une excellente présidente.
