Guillaume Lefebvre is a bassist and double bassist. He has just completed a Master’s degree at McGill (2023) and Au loin (Far away) is his first album. He is accompanied by Yannick Anctil on piano, Jérémie Dallaire on guitar and pedal steel, and Guillaume Picard on drums. Under the supervision of the legendary George Doxas in the studio, Lefebvre and his friends offer jazz in a subdued, modern Scandinavian light, which would fit in well with an ECM project, for example. A few atonal stirrings occasionally shake up the calm, fairly impressionistic general framework, which is itself overlaid by easy, contemplative melodies. Excellent playing of the delicate structures created here, almost poetic.
As a first opus, Au loin hits the nail on the head and suggests a promising future.
