Who says rockers are soft-hearted? This first solo offering from the leader of rock band Fudge proves the point.
David Bujold abandons distorted guitars, bizarre off-beats and delirious vocals to plunge us into total folk immersion. Acoustic guitars, strings, gentle vocals, an intimate, chamber album. And that’s saying something!
The press release tells us that Le Sol ou le ciel is influenced by Nick Drake and Sufjan Stevens. This wasn’t really necessary, as these influences are so apparent that David Bujold seems to enjoy quoting them. On the French side, Philippe B and Philippe Brach come to mind as inspirations.
But let’s not get carried away. This unpretentious album includes some rather well-crafted ironic lyrics, with titles like Donnez-moi aux Pauvres, Ton Coeur a pu une Cenne, Un Bal dans un Fusil. Humor and clear-sightedness. The spirit of Fudge is gently present.
This album is a lovely acoustic surprise. Perfect for the coming season. When the ground fills with leaves and the sky becomes varied.
David Bujold will present his album, as part of Coup de cœur francophone, on November 11 at bar le Verre-Bouteille.
