Christian Bernard – Traverser l’orage

· by Frédéric Cardin

In the neoclassical current in vogue at the moment, here is a proposal from the Quebecer Christian Bernard. Perhaps you already know him if you are enough of a fan of what is happening at the Oscars of cinema, because he wrote the song “Le train de Monbijoufor the short film La femme et le TGV by Timo von Gunten, nominated in the Best Live Action Short Film category in 2016. It starred Jane Birkin.

Bernard is productive because his previous album, Black Lotus, was released just in 2024. I actually reviewed it HERE at the time. The same recipe is applied here, that is, simple and caressing melodies, harmonies in minor keys (melancholy), some minimalist arpeggios, etc. Regarding Black Lotus, I said that if Bernard doesn’t invent anything, he breathes a tender authenticity into his pieces. It’s still the case here.

If you already like Roman Zavada, Alexandra Stréliski, or Chilly Gonzales, dive in without fear.
