Pianist Vijay Iyer’s trio has everything a jazz fan could possibly want from a small acoustic ensemble. Double bassist Stephan Crump, drummer Marcus Gilmore and their leader create a brilliant work together. Iyer’s concepts are fresh in all their aspects: harmonies, melodic articulation, freedom in improvised sequences and exceptional rhythmic concepts — hence the album title. Several periods of modern and contemporary jazz are reflected here and there in the trio’s music, marked by the the footprints of Coltrane, Monk, Strayhorn and Ellington. A perfect merging, elevation of the spirit guaranteed.
