On An die Musik, by double bassist Joel Quarrington, accompanied by pianist David Jalbert, we’re talking about Schubert’s works rearranged for the double bass. Only Quarrington’s virtuosity allows him to take up such a challenge. Not only does he succeed in making the moment genuinely moving, he also manages to present works heard so often, from welcome new angles. With a perfect sound recording, this album should have been on a big international label. That’s not the case — you have to get this independent production direct from the artist. A worthwhile gesture.
