Amyl & The Sniffers – Cartoon Darkness (Top Albums 2024)

· by Eric Cohen

Riding that thunder from down under, Amyl and the Sniffers are a force to be reckoned with, spreading the fire and fury of the Australian rock ‘n roll scene with a heavy dose of punk attitude. Representing Melbourne’s pub rock scene with aplomb, Amyl and the Sniffers consists of vocalist Amy Taylor, drummer Bryce Wilson, guitarist Declan Mehrtens and bassist Gus Romer, and if you were lucky enough to catch them on tour this summer, you can attest to their pure raw power. Looking and sounding like a demonically possessed version of Farrah Fawcett backing up early days AC/DC, the Amyl and the Sniffers experience is undeniable, punching the listener in the face with searing riffs, unflinching lyrics, and a vocal delivery that rivals the best of the banshees! The new album, Cartoon Darkness, is pure rock fury, from the very first note of the leadoff track, Jerkin’, which kicks off with the lyrics: You’re a dumb cunt, you’re an asshole
Every time you talk, you mumble, grumbles
Need to wipe your mouth after you speak
‘Cause it’s an asshole, bum hole, dumb cunt
You are ugly all day, I am hot always
You are just a critic and you want to hit it
You are fucking spiders, I am drinking riders

The video for the leadoff track was actually banned due to full frontal nudity, but it can still be found in all of its glory on the band’s website.
