The rap collective has since made more sophisticated records, but this glorious first draft remains special. Sprung spontaneously from a convergence of rappers and individually accomplished beat makers, it is a small Big Bang from which a sound, style and speech have sprung. Alaclair has brought a dose of fun and intelligence back into francophone hip hop, one that we no longer thought possible, right there in the familiar and colourful language we were looking for. It’s hard to argue that most of the rap ideas here have stood the test of time. 4.99 is a rock.
