Pop MTL 2026 | Here Comes Québécois Hyperpop

by Joséphine Campbell-Lashuk

You’re in the back of the car of a girl you know from camp, she passes back her phone and asks for you to choose the next song. So far the playlist is Ke$ha, Carly Rae Jepsen and Marie-Mai. You’re on your way to a house show in Montreal passing through St-Jerome. This is the scene I imagine playing La Monarque’s Electro-Pop… or even Hyperpop.

She feels like the fun pre-party music you want to hear when you feel unsure of who you’ll run into at a house party and want to feel confident.

Her beats float somewhere between experimental techno like sexy sushi and early 2000s pop divas.

She stands on stage with a long white t-shirt and her long black hair flipping back and forth.

Her purposefully stripped-down appearance doesn’t change her enthusiastic performance.

Her MC and DJ that’s on stage with her is wearing a similar oversized t-shirt and a large false mustache, giving her the nickname mario when introduced and thanked at the end of the set.

Her energy is angry, funny and honest.

She doesn’t shy away from calling out the misogyny she’s suffered and stands her ground.

Her feminist rightful rage is supported by her sometimes ironic lyrics that humanize her confidence.

Between her songs, her honesty and resilience pours out, she tells a deeply honest story about her father’s passing just this summer.

She introduces the final song by speaking on the complexity of their relationship.

Her voice is powerful and clear pop style with an artistic use of autotune creating a hypnotising flow.

Here comes Québécois Hyperpop; her name is la Monarque.
