» -Andrew Patterson

Two-time Polaris nominees, Toronto alt-pop jokesters, led by Robin Dann with Thom Gill and Philippe Melanson. And therein lies the wonder of Bernice: they remind us that the arcade funk of Mario Kart 64 need not exist in mutual exclusivity with a rich tapestry of human emotion. Even if we’re living in this most cursed of timelines, we can look into the heart of things, dwell on the challenges we’re called to witness, and find a little levity to carry us through; grab a little mushroom and cruise in the existential soup.” -Andrew Patterson

Marker Starling (Chris A. Cummings, formerly Mantler) has been playing his trademark Melancholy Party Jams in Toronto and elsewhere since 1999. Currently performing as a six-piece consisting of Cummings (Wurlitzer and vocals), Jay Anderson (drums), Matt McLaren (bass), Dorothea Paas (guitar and vocals), Andrew Scott (guitar and vocals) and Ed Squires (percussion), the band recently opened for Stereolab in Toronto and Montreal.

Only The End, Ashley Shadow’s second album, retains a melancholy introspection armed with palpable hope and a lush sonic palette. Ashley’s haunting voice is always a treat to listen to, as we’ve heard in her past collaborative projects with artists such as Bonnie Prince Billy and Lightning Dust.
