· by Rédaction PAN M 360

Chuck Copenace is an Ojibway jazz musician based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Over the course of his career, Copenace has performed extensively throughout Canada, the United States and abroad. He has also performed with a wide range of Winnipeg artists, made numerous television appearances, collected a play on CBC radio shows such as Unreserved and released his 2017 debut, EP 1. More recently, Copenace has collaborated with Tom Wilson and Iskwē on Blue Moon Drive (2020) and Starless Nights (2021) and performed with the duo live at the Indspire Awards 2020. There’s a wider purpose behind his efforts for which the new Oshki Manitou project is just a starting point. “I’m committed to sharing my story and I want to introduce young people to jazz, but I also want to bring indigenous musicians together. And I think my music can be a platform to further that mission.”

Melissa Pipe is a Montreal-based baritone saxophonist, bassoonist, composer and arranger. In addition to leading her own quintet and sextet, she performs regularly with jazz, hip hop, popular, indie and classical ensembles on a freelance basis. A versatile musician and composer, she has written for small group, chamber ensemble, big band and symphony orchestra. While pursuing her formal studies in saxophone and jazz composition, she began exploring the woodwinds traditionally played by saxophonists (flute, clarinet, bass clarinet), but soon became interested in and enchanted by one of the more unusual doubles: the bassoon. This triggered a long, parallel road of independent study, exploration and chance encounters that have enabled her to hone her skills as a bassoonist and composer.
