“Kobo Town continues to redefine Calypso music and push the boundaries of the Caribbean sound” (McLeod Gazette, 2022). Kobo Town is the district of Port-of-Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, where Calypso emerged in the late 19th century, influenced by African rhythms and European music. Deeply rooted in this traditional carnival folklore, the music of the band, founded in 2005 and nominated for Junos and Polaris (and whose tracks have been covered by Carlos Santana and Calypso Rose), is nonetheless ultra-modern: dark and joyful, poetic and danceable, with incisive lyrics and Ska, Dancehall, Dub, Zouk and Hip-hop modulations underpinned by overwhelming brass, as evidenced by their latest album Carnival of the Ghosts (2022).
