“You’re an artist full of light. You radiate something very powerful and yet soft at the same time. You write beautifully and are daring.” That is how Lokua Kanza, jury chair of the Prix Découvertes RFI 2021, underscored Alesh’s win that year. Starting out as a rapper and dubbed King Alesh, he now incorporates into his music, which he calls, Ndombofronic, different rhythmic influences, Ndombolo, Kwaito, Afrobeat and Kuduro as well as house. All his songs are in Lingala, which can be heard on his latest album, Mongongo (2021). If his style has evolved over time, his words are just as piercing, enough to make some politicians gnash their teeth, and no less militant, earning him the opportunity to meet Barak Obama in the context of the Mandela Washington Fellowship.
