Under the composer’s pen, the music transforms the sacred text, accentuating its tragic character. The evangelist’s ardently expressive narratives are the common thread running through a drama punctuated by contemplative arias. As for the meditative chorales entrusted to the choir, they flesh out the work and give it a universal, timeless dimension.
