According to the New York Times, saxophonist-composer STEVE LEHMAN is “a musical thinker on the cutting edge”. He composes for first-rate chamber ensembles and leads small and medium-sized groups. His nuanced compositions draw inspiration from many musical avenues and feature his inimitable alto saxophone playing. SÉLÉBÉYONE is one of his most ambitious syntheses, a genre-hybridizing laboratory for two radically complementary voices in contemporary rap: HPRIZM (Antipop Consortium’s HIGH PRIEST), who speaks English, and Senegalese GASTON BANDIMIC, who speaks Wolof. Other essential ingredients in the recipe are drummer DAMION REID, post-J Dilla groove maestro, and French saxophonist MACIEK LASSERRE. After the eponymous album Sélébéyone (which means “intersection” in Wolof), in 2016, came Xaybu: The Unseen (Pi Recordings, 2022), a great step forward in the history of jazz-rap fusion, and a very contemporary stance on intercultural and cross-genre collaboration.
