Cheikh Sidi Bémol’s latest release, Chouf!, the band offers up dynamic, edgy songs with a heavy dose of blues. Buoyed by the charismatic vocals of the talented Hocine Boukella, this album is a rousing call to action against the forces of corruption and religious fanaticism, while also serving as a sincere love letter to rock ’n’ roll.

With Chouf!, Boukella returns to his musical roots, to what first inspired him to pick up a guitar and raise his voice in song. His career began in Algerian underground circles which saw the reinvention of traditional Maghreb music. Boukella first appeared on the Paris scene as a member of Cheikh Sidi Bémol, channelling his diverse influences into a unique style known as Gourbi Rock. Combining blues and rock with Chaabi, Gnawa, Celtic and Berber idioms, his multilingual lyrics use humour and sarcasm to challenge the status quo through rousing anthems to freedom.

A keen political observer, Boukella’s music remains steadfastly optimistic, brimming with confidence in a younger generation yearning for liberty and hungry for change. Chouf! is an electrifying manifesto, a call for new ideas and a battle hymn for the marginalized. Love—particularly love for women—is a recurring theme throughout, with two of the album’s songs paying tribute to women’s role in society, painting them as selfless symbols of hope and equality. Hocine Boukella puts on an exhilarating show that is sure to inspire.
