For decades, Detroit, Michigan has been churning out music that proves prototypical in myriad genres, the postal code of American pioneers in blues, jazz, soul and hip hop. Add to those punk and techno, two musical movements that would seem to belong on opposite sides of the tracks. They’re next-door neighbours on this collection of rough, raw, almost caustically cool cover versions, a high-five across the divide and a loud exclamation of Motor City municipal pride. Warehouse-party classics by techno trailblazers like Carl Craig, Juan Atkins, and Derrick May, remade with love if not exactly tenderness by Detroit’s longstanding lords of soul-infused garage punk.
