One of the most persistent myths about the viola is that its repertoire is limited. Over the past 20 years, no less than 30 viola concertos have been composed! Among them are Viola Concerto by Germany’s Jörg Widmann, written for Antoine Tamestit, his frequent collaborator from France. The composer and player have worked closely together here, you can hear it, even feel it. It’s obvious that this recording cannot faithfully recreate all the details of the score (movement, spatialization of the musicians and other gestures performed by the soloist), but we can feel its energy, excitement and transcendence of the medium.
