The name of guitarist Roger Miron will probably ring a bell for those who remember French B from the ’90s. Having joined the electro band after their first album, he helped them negotiate a rock reorientation. Miron and his six-string were then spotted with the late Ève Cournoyer and the group Les Chiens. Listening to the new EP of his Miron Noir project, one might think that it’s to the sound of the latter band that the music he plays today most closely resembles.

The four new tracks he has concocted with his sidekick Pierre Desmarais are less ethereal than those of the band that Eric Goulet used to lead, but they have the same nocturnal flavour. There is also a lot of night and darkness in Miron’s lyrics. A darkness in which you can see more clearly what’s hidden during the day.

Without being a great singer, Miron has a voice that blends well with the mysterious atmospheres that emanate from his compositions. However, it’s his supple and graceful guitar playing that’s most noticeable. The notes he coaxes from his instrument are like Perseids shooting across the jet-black vault ecompassing the four tracks presented here. It’s good to still have news of this old road warrior.
