Fasciné par son théâtre, Berlioz voyait en Shakespeare une sorte de répondant, d’alter ego, à deux siècles de distance. La grande actrice Harriet Smithson, vue sur scène dans Hamlet, allait devenir sa muse, puis sa femme, objet d’une flamme dévorante, qui lui inspira notamment sa Symphonie fantastique, métaphore éternelle de l’artiste créateur. Un concert sous le signe du romantisme le plus pur, occasion des débuts chez nous des jeunes prodiges du NYO-USA et du violoniste vedette Gil Shaham, sous la direction experte de Sir Andrew Davis.
Berlioz was captivated by Shakespeare’s plays and saw the bard as a kind of advocate and alter ego two centuries his elder. The composer was utterly consumed with passion for the famous English actress Harriet Smithson, whom he saw on stage in Hamlet and who soon became his muse, and then his spouse. It was Smithson who inspired the Symphonie fantastique, an enduring metaphor for the artist-creator.
