POP Montréal 2026 : Towa Bird et Mother Soki au Bar Le Ritz PDB

par Rédaction PAN M 360

Towa Bird

When Towa Bird first dreamed up the title track for her sophomore album Gentleman, the 27-year-old singer/songwriter/guitarist unlocked an entirely new way of moving through the world. A knowing subversion of the old-world archetype, the Hong Kong-born artist’s take on the modern gentleman reimagines the term as an emblem of queer confidence: an exquisite blurring of masculine and feminine, defined by unapologetic swagger and disarming sensitivity. In a daring evolution of her acclaimed debut American Hero (a 2024 LP that inspired Rolling Stone to proclaim that “Towa Bird is the rock & roll firecracker we need right now”), Gentleman unveils that fully embodied identity in a suite of songs both supremely assured and resolutely tender—ultimately marking a profound shift from self-discovery to self-possession.

Mother Soki

Carving her way through adolescence with a fierce artistic drive, Minneapolis-based musician Mother Soki discovered her passion for music production while attending college in Chicago. Immersed in everything she loves, she gravitated toward the dreamy textures of synth pop and the sonic nostalgia of the ‘80s & ’90s. Drawing daily inspiration from her surroundings, she channels her creativity through classic influences: Prince, Joni Mitchell, Cocteau Twins & Madonna. Her sound blends modern interpretations of vintage synths with heavy guitars and airy, spacious vocals—creating contrasts that shouldn’t work, but somehow do. Mother Soki makes the unexpected feel seamless.

Festival international Nuits d’Afrique : Sandya Fusion à l’esplanade Tranquille

Infused with reggae, funk, jazz and rock, Sandya’s Gnawa music is a vibrant, celebratory space that, like an incantation, is shared exclusively by those present; a sacred circle where trance brings people together. The percussion beats out a rhythm, the brass instruments respond, and the violin soars… Rooted in the sacred traditions of dakka marrakchia and the Issawa, Sandya—led by the guembri master, Fathallah Cherkaoui, whose unique voice punctuates every chord—is pure joy and resonates like a call to dance and to let go, so we can better find ourselves, no matter where we come from.

Festival international Nuits d’Afrique : Elida Almeida à l’esplanade Tranquille

Elida Almeida “celebrates the modern appeal of her archipelago’s folklore, which she brings to life and embodies with a playful sensuality,” (Télérama, 2023). Winner of the 2015 Prix Découverte RFI, she is definitely turned towards the limelight. With heartfelt sincerity, she conjures up images of Cape Verdean life, bringing her country’s spirit alive with fiery and festive funaná, batuque and tabanka rhythms, which she reimagines with urban flair, while preserving their roots. Also a member of the Cesária Évora Orchestra, Elida upholds the legacy of the “barefoot diva,” even if she does not quite share the melancholy. Her new album, Spedju, intimate and introspective, places her voice firmly in the great Cape Verdean tradition.

The baroque mandolin reinvented
Avi Avital has revolutionized the perception of the mandolin in the world of classical music. The charismatic virtuoso brings an orchestral dimension and presence to this instrument that fascinates audiences around the world.
Vivaldi and the Venetian spirit
Antonio Vivaldi composes for the mandolin with his characteristic brilliance and virtuosity. The Concerto in C major, RV 425, displays all the brilliance of Vivaldi’s writing, while the Concerto for Lute in D major, transcribed by Avital, reveals the natural affinities between these plucked string instruments.
Bach transcribed and transformed
Avi Avital takes two concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach—the Concerto for Keyboard in D minor, BWV 1052, and the Concerto for Violin in A minor, BWV 1041—and adapts them for the mandolin. These daring transcriptions shed new light on familiar works, revealing unexpected textures.
From Scarlatti to Avison
Alessandro Scarlatti and Charles Avison enrich the program, the latter with his reinterpretation of Domenico Scarlatti in a concerto grosso of refined elegance. POP Montréal 2026 : Truck Violence, Nelligan et InHeadlights au Piccolo Rialto – Salle Cult MTL

par Rédaction PAN M 360

Truck Violence

Canada’s Truck Violence howl through the harsh edges of hardcore and folk with an ending result that is both comforting and confrontational. Their second full length record— The weathervane is my body— is an attempt to answer, an attempt at conciliation through refusal. After relocating from the Alberta prairies to Montréal at just seventeen years old, Truck Violence guitarist and banjoist Paul Lecours and singer-poet Karsyn Henderson navigated the shift from rural life to the city. The two grew up in a small town of 600 people, graduating in a class of nine. By age fifteen they were running a local studio and radio station. There was no industry support, no infrastructure, no template for what they were trying to do, only the work itself and the conviction that it was worth doing. They drew influence from punk, shoegaze, and sludge, and their distinctive sound emerges from years of experimentation across multiple projects, each shaping their evolving sonic identity. Upon their move to Montreal, they were joined by Chris Clegg (bass) and Thomas Hart (percussion) and began building Truck Violence from the ground up.

Festival international Nuits d’Afrique : Sahra Halgan à l’esplanade Tranquille

She sings to exist and to resist. “Powered by the rock vibe of the trio from Lyon accompanying her, Sahra Halgan has but one aim: to put her country on the world map,” (RFI, 2021). With her national flag always within reach, this emblematic artist from Somaliland—a small country that declared its independence from Somalia in 1991 but is recognized by virtually no other nation—transforms each concert into an opportunity to speak out. Her raw, fiery voice breathes new life into ancient melodies that intersect with hard-hitting riffs and hypnotic drums at the crossroads of Ethio-jazz, Tuareg blues, and garage rock.
