The Boulila project is a quartet that plays Gnawa fusion music from Morocco; inspired by the great gwana masters like Mustapha Bakbou and Hmida Boussou. Corey Gulkin se délecte de l’étrange et s’y sent comme chez soi. Issu du monde de la musique folk, l’artiste de Montréal a passé la dernière décennie à se frayer progressivement un chemin vers l’expérimentation et la transformation émotionnelle, composant au passage un opus sournois. Après s’être débarrassé d’un pseudonyme familier en faveur de son propre nom, Corey a lancé All the Things I’ll Forget. Cet album conceptuel profondément intime traduit et transforme son expérience vécue dans une relation abusive à travers un trio de harpe, de banjo et de guitare électrique.

Corey Gulkin revels in the peculiar and makes it feel like home. Emerging from the world of folk music, the Montreal guitarist and songwriter has spent the last decade gradually carving a path towards experimentation and emotional transformation, composing a sneaky opus in the process. After shedding a familiar pseudonym in favour of their own name, they released All the Things I’ll Forget. This deeply intimate concept album translated and transformed their experience in an abusive relationship through a trio of harp, banjo and electric guitar.

OSM : La Cinquième Symphonie de Mahler

Dans le cadre du cycle Mahler présenté à l’OSM, le maestro Rafael Payare dirigera la monumentale Symphonie n^o 5 du compositeur autrichien, au lendemain d’un concert du même programme présenté au Carnegie Hall à New York. Entre tempête, tension et vision du paradis, ce majestueux édifice instrumental chemine des ténèbres vers la lumière, de la marche funèbre initiale jusqu’au rondo final triomphal. Le pianiste Yefim Bronfman sera quant à lui de retour à l’OSM dans le virtuose Concerto n^o 2 de Bartók.

As part of the Mahler cycle presented by the OSM, Maestro Rafael Payare will conduct the Austrian composer’s monumental Symphony no. 5. Storminess, tension, and heavenly visions carry this majestic instrumental edifice from darkness into light, from the opening funeral march to the triumphant Rondo-Finale. Also on the program: pianist Yefim Bronfman is back with the OSM to perform Bartók’s masterful Concerto no. 2.

Lonely Child Collectif, dont le nom s’inspire d’une pièce de Claude Vivier revisite en première mondiale trois œuvres du compositeur québécois pour un concert exceptionnel où le chant, le cirque, la danse et la musique se rencontrent dans une mise en scène spectaculaire ! Une rencontre fabuleuse entre les arts du cirque et les musiques nouvelles avec les artistes torontoises Stacie Dunlop (voix), Angola Murdoch (tissu aérien), Holly Treddenick (cube aérien) et les artistes du Vivier David Therrien-Brongo et le Quatuor Bozzini.

Lonely Child Collective revisits three works by Quebec composer Claude Vivier for an exceptional concert where song, circus, dance, and music meet in a spectacular staging! A fabulous encounter between circus arts and new music with Toronto artists Stacie Dunlop (voice), Angola Murdoch (aerial fabric), Holly Treddenick (aerial cube) and Vivier artists David Therrien-Brongo and the Quatuor Bozzini.

I Musici de Montréal / Autriche: Maxim Rysanov et Mozart

Ce dernier sera donc au cœur de ce programme très accessible qui marque le retour attendu de Maxim Rysanov, altiste magnifique, célèbre internationalement, et chef très apprécié des musiciens et musiciennes d’I Musici et de son public. La radieuse Symphonie no 29 en la majeur complètera la poignante Symphonie concertante de Mozart, véritable double concerto pour violon et alto qui permettra à notre admirable violon-solo, Julie Triquet, de se joindre à Rysanov. En complément de programme, de manière fort à propos puisqu’il est lui-même d’origine ukrainienne, il dirigera les Variations sur un thème ukrainien de Malcom Arnold, compositeur connu pour sa musique de film (qui lui a d’ailleurs valu un Oscar en 1957).

Without a doubt, you would say “Mozart!” if I said “Austria.” Mozart will be front and centre in this approachable concert. This performance will mark the expected return of the magnificent, worldrenowned violist Maxim Rysanov who is a valued conductor among I Musici musicians and audience members alike. Mozart’s stunning Twenty-ninth Symphony in A major will supplement the poignant Sinfonia Concertante, an original double concerto for violin and viola in which our admirable violin soloist Julie Triquet will join Rysanov. Because Rysanov hails from Ukraine, it is only fitting for him to conduct Malcolm Arnold’s Variations on a Ukrainian Folksong as an addition to the concert. Arnold was a composer known for his film music, earning him an Oscar in 1957.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor au MTELUS

Godspeed You! Black Emperor a sorti une série d’albums entre 1997 et 2002, largement reconnus comme redéfinissant ce que peut être la musique de protestation, où des compositions instrumentales de rock de chambre servent de bandes sonores à l’aliénation et à la résistance au capitalisme moderne. Après un hiatus de sept ans qui a commencé en 2003, Godspeed est revenu sur scène en décembre 2010 (en organisant le festival britannique All Tomorrow’s Parties) et la période post-réunion du groupe dure maintenant depuis plus de dix ans, marquée par des centaines de concerts à guichets fermés et trois albums supplémentaires, qui ont tous été accueillis avec enthousiasme.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor released a series of albums between 1997 and 2002, widely recognized as redefining what protest music can be, where instrumental chamber rock compositions serve as soundtracks to alienation and resistance to modern capitalism. After a seven-year hiatus that began in 2003, Godspeed returned to the stage in December 2010 (hosting the UK’s All Tomorrow’s Parties festival), and the band’s post-reunion period has now lasted more than a decade, marked by hundreds of sold-out shows and three additional albums, all of which have been enthusiastically received.
