This dazzling West Coast string ensemble plays Josh Zubot’s music with an uncommon combination of drive and sensitivity, animating music that draws on myriad sources, from the most rootedly folkish to the most loftily modern, like Béla Bartók for the 21st century. They will feature a brand-new suite Zubot has composed for this FIMAV appearance.
Avec sa voix de fausset (qui peut faire penser à Betty Carter ou à Jeanne Lee) et son jeu de guitare kaléidoscopique, Eric Chenaux pond des chansons qui, aussi expérimentales soient-elles, débordent d’émotion. Il sera accompagné d’un collègue de sa période torontoise, l’incomparable chanteur et multi-instrumentiste Ryan Driver.
Through the uncanny combination of his vocal falsetto – evoking even Betty Carter or Jeanne Lee – and his kaleidoscopic guitar playing, Eric Chenaux’s songs are drenched in emotion while remaining resolutely experimental. Here he re-joins a kindred colleague from his days based in Toronto, the incomparable singer and multi-instrumentalist, Ryan Driver.

Celui-ci a développé cette œuvre, d’abord commandée par le centre d’artistes Western Front, au fil de résidences de création à Vancouver entre 2019 et 2022. Il tire le maximum de l’immense talent que contient ce groupe.
Featuring members of the Darius Jones Trio and Josh Zubot Strings, fLuXkit Vancouver is rich testimony to Jones’s brilliance as a composer. Originally commissioned by the Western Front artist-run-centre, Jones developed the work during residencies in Vancouver 2019-22, activating the immeasurable talents of this astonishing group.

Rafael Toral’s Spectral Evolution was widely hailed as one of 2024’s best records, a dreamlike wash of sumptuous chord progressions paired with ethereal synthesised sounds, often evoking birdsong. Guitar Concert draws on the latest chapter of Toral’s work, presenting material from the brand-new Traveling Light (Drag City), comparably rich treatments of timeless jazz ballads.
