Whitelands – Sunlight Echoes

Sunlight Echoes arrives the way a dream does when you’re half-awake: warm and insistent, with guitar tones that feel borrowed from a summer you may never have actually lived. The hazy and bright shoegaze of Whitelands opens the album skipping — yes, skipping — which for a shoegaze band is practically revolutionary. “Heat of the Summer” sounds like joy that has been through the laundry and come out softer.

But spend long enough inside this record and the brightness becomes strange. The sun here is the kind that illuminates hospital waiting rooms and empty bank accounts. Somewhere in the middle, the album changes posture — the Britpop breezes thin out, the weight sets in, and a guest appearance from Emma Anderson on “Sparklebaby” arrives like a voice transmitted from another dimension.

Sunlight Echoes feels like an album built by people the universe genuinely tried to break. It’s radiant, aching, occasionally euphoric and quietly miraculous. The echoes eventually fade, as all echoes do, but the warmth stays in the walls long after the music stops.
