Présence Autochtone : Forestare à la Place des Festivals

L’ensemble de guitares Forestare, composé de 12 guitares et d’une contrebasse, célèbre son 20ième anniversaire en 2022. Depuis ses débuts, Forestare a réalisé plus d’une cinquantaine d’œuvres originales et adaptations. Ce qui en fait l’ensemble de guitares possédant l’un des plus vastes répertoires au monde.
Forestare a quatre albums à son actif. Les deux premiers et le dernier, parus chez ATMA classique, ont reçu un accueil dithyrambique de la critique et du public. En effet, l’ensemble a remporté pour son premier album éponyme le Félix du meilleur album instrumental en 2007, ainsi que deux Bourses RIDEAU qui lui ont permis de présenter son concert De l’arbre à la guitare dans plus de 50 salles du Québec, en plus de jouer dans plusieurs festivals en France, au Chili et sur plusieurs grandes scènes du Canada. L’album Arauco a, quant à lui, été en nomination au Gala de l’ADISQ ainsi qu’aux Prix Opus et a été acclamé par la critique guitaristique de haute pointe. Le spectacle Arauco a également été produit sur plusieurs grandes scènes au Québec.

Guitar ensemble Forestare, composed of 12 guitars and double bass, has already existed for 16 years. Since its inception, the ensemble has participated in the creation of close to 50 original works and has adapted nearly another 100 for its unique make-up. In doing this, the ensemble has created the largest repertoire of music for guitar orchestra in the world.
The group has released three albums to date. The first two were released with the label, ATMA Classics. Both albums were welcomed to much acclaim from critics and audiences alike. The first self-titled release garnered a Félix in the category “Instrumental Album of the Year” in 2007.  It also led them to being awarded the Bourse RIDEAU two times which permitted them to present their concert “De l’arbre à la guitare” in more than 50 concert halls throughout Québec, in several music festivals in France, Chili and in many reputable concert halls throughout Canada. Their second album Araucoreceived nominations for both a Félix and a Prix Opus and was highly praised by critics. The show based on the album has been performed in several concert halls in Québec.

Présence Autochtone : Native Mafia Family à la Place des Festivals

Native Mafia Family (NMF) est née dans la réserve Maliotenam Mak Uashat, communauté autochtone dans laquelle Lildeuce24K, ImKoma YJ$, et Ismael ont tous grandi. L’univers du groupe prend forme au travers la fumée d’une réalité altérée. C’est en émergeant de ce monde illusoire que les membres s’allient pour survivre, raconter leur histoire sur une trame de fond rap et célébrer leur culture innue. Leur premier album THE 27A’S paru en 2023 a été réalisé de façon indépendante. Le prochain album paraîtra sous l’étiquette Bienvenue Records à l’automne 2024.

Native Mafia Family (NMF) was born on the Maliotenam Mak Uashat reserve, an Indigenous community where Lildeuce24K, ImKoma YJ$, and Ismael all grew up. The group’s universe takes shape through the smoke of an altered reality. It is by emerging from this illusory world that the members come together to survive, tell their story with a rap background, and celebrate their Innu culture. Their first album, THE 27A’S, was released independently in 2023. The next album will be released under the Bienvenue Records label in the fall of 2024.

OSM : Le célèbre Quintette « La truite » de Schubert

Le raffinement et l’humeur badine qui régnaient dans les salons viennois teintent le Quintette de Schubert, plus particulièrement le quatrième mouvement, une suite de variations sur son célèbre lied « La truite ». Contemporain de Schubert, George Onslow  a laissé une importante production de musique de chambre, truffée de petits bijoux à découvrir.  Ce concert sera l’occasion d’entendre le pianiste Godwin Friesen, lauréat du Concours OSM 2022.

The elegance and lighthearted humour of Vienna’s salons rise to the surface in Schubert’s Quintet, particularly its fourth movement, a suite of variations on the composer’s celebrated lied “The Trout.” His contemporary George Onslow’s bounteous chamber music output is a cornucopia of little gems to discover. This concert also provides an opportunity to hear pianist Godwin Friesen, winner of the 2022 OSM Competition.

OSM : L’OSM joue Rachmaninov et Amy Beach

La virtuosité pianistique de Rachmaninov était légendaire et elle transparaît particulièrement dans son Concerto no 3 avec lequel Marie-Ange Nguci, étoile montante du piano, fera ses débuts à l’OSM. S’inspirant des folklores irlandais, écossais et anglais, Beach rend hommage à la diversité des cultures étatsuniennes dans sa symphonie «Gaélique». Avec cette œuvre aux teintes orchestrales chatoyantes, Beach s’affirme comme compositrice d’envergure.

Rachmaninoff’s pianistic virtuosity was legendary, a fact he made markedly obvious in his Piano Concerto no. 3, in which rising star Marie-Ange Nguci will make her OSM debut. Drawing on Irish, Scottish, and English folklore, Amy Beach’s Gaelic Symphony celebrates an array of diverse cultural legacies in the United States, and with this sumptuously orchestrated work she established herself as a composer of stature.

Festival International Nuits d’Afrique : Baz Konpa à la scène TD

Un samedi soir parfait sous les étoiles, dans une chaleur un peu collante (ça fait partie de l’expérience!)… Clavier, guitare, basse, conga, tanbou, batterie: tous les ingrédients sont réunis pour une session de danse sensuelle, collés-serrés. Depuis les années 50, s’adaptant aux époques et toujours avec le même succès, le kompa encapsule le romantisme haitien dans des groove stylés où les synthétiseurs dictent le tempo, sans perdre la trace du merengue et du twoubadou. Sous l’impulsion de Jean Wesly et Duckens Fils, Baz Konpa déroule une solide prestation aux rythmes langoureux des bals de la Perle des Antilles, de ceux qui font agréablement tourner la tête!

Since the ’50s, always in step with the times and never losing any of its appeal, konpa has been encapsulating Haitian Romanticism in styled rhythms where synthesizers dictate the tempo while maintaining the méringue and twoubadou groove. Formed by brothers Duckens and Jean Wesly Fils, Baz Konpa delivers a solid performance to the Pearl of the Antilles’ dreamy dance rhythms, the kind that make your head spin in the best of ways!

À 25 ans, le chanteur, auteur-compositeur et producteur originaire de Staten Island, Louis Attillio Vigorito, mieux connu sous le nom de Louyah, a prouvé que sa polyvalence en tant qu’artiste le distingue de manière unique. Élevé dans le sud du New Jersey, Louyah a fait ses débuts musicaux en tant que vocaliste et guitariste des groupes de metal Premonition et Idle Minds. Après six années passées en tant que membre de groupe, il a décidé de se lancer dans une carrière solo. En 2020, il a sorti son premier album studio intitulé Smile For Me, suivi de son EP VIRGO la même année, sous le label indépendant Loud Era Records. Plutôt que de se concentrer sur un seul genre, la musique de Louyah intègre un mélange éclectique de sons fusionnant pop, rock, rap et éléments R&B.

At 25 years young, Staten Island-born singer-songwriter and producer, Louis Attillio Vigorito or better known as Louyah, has proved that his versatility as an artist has established himself as, unlike any other. Raised in south New Jersey, Louyah entered the music scene as a vocalist and guitarist of metal bands Premonition and Idle Minds. After six years as a bandmember, he pursued a solo career. In 2020 he released his debut studio album titled Smile For Me, followed by his EP titled, VIRGO, within the same year through independent record label, Loud Era Records. Rather than specifying on one genre, Louyah’s music incorporates an eclectic mix of sounds fusing pop, rock, rap, and R&B elements.

Festival International Nuits d’Afrique : Les Mamans du Congo x Rrobin à la scène Loto-Québec

“Instruments percussifs, ustensiles de cuisine, pulsations électroniques, bass music et afrobeats portent les chœurs et le rap des chanteuses” (FIP, 2023). Gladys Samba, charismatique meneuse au franc-parler et au rire explosif de ce groupe afro-féministe hors du commun, acclamé par le public et les médias du monde entier, défend avec ferveur et conviction la place des femmes dans la société, au point d’utiliser des batteries de casseroles comme percussions. Tout un message! Associant de manière truculente tendres berceuses bantoues, sages préceptes du matrimoine congolais, chants ancestraux aux ponctuations hip hop et rythmes rapides et syncopés d’une électro concoctée par le producteur Rrobin, la musique des Mamans du Congo ne laisse personne indifférent.

“Percussions, kitchen utensils, electronic rhythms, bass and afro-beats help carry the choruses and rap vocals of these female artists” (FIP, 2023). Led by the candid and charismatic Gladys Samba, this extraordinary afro-feminist group, hailed by audiences and media around the world, fervently defends women’s place in society, underscored by their use of kitchen tools as percussion instruments. What a powerful message! Their potent mix of tender Bantu lullabies, wise teachings of Congolese women, ancestral chants punctuated by hip hop rhythms and fast, syncopated electro beats concocted by producer Rrobin, it’s impossible not to be moved by these inspiring mamas of the Congo.

Festival International Nuits d’Afrique : Flavia Coelho à L’Olympia

“Elle chante la joie dans un monde où le bonheur ne semble plus possible et nous rappelle au fond que la vie n’est jamais qu’une ballade” (France Inter, 2024). Flavia Coelho a rempli l’Olympia de Paris en mars dernier. Sans aucun doute elle fera un succès de son spectacle en ouverture de cette 39ème édition du Festival international Nuits d’Afrique. S’émancipant de tous les stéréotypes, l’irradiante et insaisissable chanteuse, autrice et compositrice fait offrande de mélodies rayonnantes. Suave, elle joue parfaitement la carte de la langueur enveloppante aussi bien que celle de la gaieté communicative, s’amusant à allier avec élégance les samba, bossa-nova, pagode et forró du Nordeste aux reggae, amapiano, G-funk et house. Louangé par la critique, son dernier album, Ginga (2024), témoigne de son identité plurielle, qui s’est construite à la faveur d’une exposition à des influences musicales multiples, entre la banlieue parisienne et les favelas cariocas.

Vocaliste originaire du Bronx, Samara Joy est la plus grande vedette montante du jazz de la nouvelle génération ! Elle a raflé le prix de la meilleure nouvelle artiste aux Grammys 2023, une distinction rarement remportée par les artistes jazz.
