Sara Curruchich in concert : great songstress of mayan roots and feminist intensity

A Maya descendant, specifically from the Kaqchikel group, and located in Guatemala, Curruchich not only defends the rights of her people, but as a contemporary intersectional activist, she also speaks out for the women of her country. An indigenous and feminist activist, then, who expresses herself through folk-pop music tinged with rock, but above all with commitment and intensity.

The lady was at the Balattou club last night. The same strong stage presence we noticed at the Mundial Montreal showcase last year is there, immanent and communicative. There’s something of Llasa de Sela in Sara, but more extravagant, affirmative. The melodies sound just right, authentic (and sometimes they are, drawn from local or more broadly Latin American folklore), but most of them come from the artist’s nimble pen. She is accompanied by a drum kit, a bass, and, most importantly, a marimba, which brings all the specific colour to this music. Curruchich sings and plays the guitar, but sometimes joins his colleague on the aforementioned marimba in invigorating four-hand bursts.

The voice, sometimes fragile but generally very accurate, has a slightly raspy quality steeped in nature and the local terroir. However, it is not without lyrical power, and when those moments arrive, the roundness is beautiful, balanced.

Here’s an artist who tickles both the emotions and the conscience in an original and personal way. Let’s hope she comes back often.

Presence autochtone 2025 | Whales Without Borders

The world premiere of “Song of the Whales,” an Australian-Canadian project featuring the Montreal ensemble Oktoecho and Indigenous artists from Canada, Australia and New Zealand, took place last night at Place des Festivals. In the interview she gave to my colleague Alain Brunet, the co-composer of the work, Australian Corrina Bonshek, reveals that she didn’t write any notes for the solo musicians, but rather proposed landscapes to inhabit. That’s exactly the effect the nearly 90-minute music offered the audience: a vast panorama with a generally contemplative and spiritual atmosphere. As the traditional instruments and voices (Inuit throat singing, Australian didgeridoo, Persian kemancheh, traditional flute and Aboriginal ocean conch, etc.) are slowly deployed, the landscape unfolds in a succession of calm (predominant) and lively (occasional) passages. The Inuit singing duo informed us, with examples, about the playful and competitive nature of throat singing, which was a very enjoyable moment.

As mentioned, the few accelerated moments added some pep to the show, whose artistic and aesthetic value I find is probably more enjoyable to experience indoors than outdoors, unless there’s a more holistic visual staging. There were a few slow parts in the performance. This is a first, so there’s still time to refine details and speed up the pacing between pieces, which sometimes seemed hesitant.

You’ll also notice that the narrative structure of the entire concert might be lost on many, as the connection to the whales sometimes becomes indescribable. That said, the work is also a grand fresco tinged with symbolism, and not a musical theatre piece that tells a specific story.

Despite these well-intentioned criticisms, I remain captivated by the immersive and enchanting atmospheres created by co-composers Katia Makdissi-Warren and Corrina Bonshek, as well as all the artists on stage, in this elaborate crossover imbued with the best spiritual-environmental insights.

Wata Igarashi

Wata Igarashi s’est rapidement imposé comme l’un des DJ et producteurs les plus en vue du Japon. Il explore le côté le plus profond de la techno à travers des EPs acclamés sur Midgar, The Bunker NY et le label Bitta de DJ Nobu, ainsi que des morceaux marquants sur des compilations de Semantica et Time to Express. Le jour, Igarashi travaille comme producteur sonore, et les compétences qu’il a développées à travers ce métier se reflètent dans ses productions, reconnues pour leur subtilité et leur finition soignée. Wata Igarashi has quickly emerged as one of Japan’s leading DJs and producers. He has been exploring the deeper side of techno through well-received EPs on Midgar, The Bunker NY, and DJ Nobu’s Bitta label, as well as standout tracks on compilations on Semantica and Time to Express. By day, Igarashi works as a sound producer and the skills he has developed through his work are reflected in his productions, which are distinguished by their subtle and carefully polished feel. Igarashi pursues a similar sound in his DJ sets, developing a distinctive take on the more trippy and psychedelic brand of techno Japan has become known for.

Marie Davidson

Marie Davidson est une force audacieuse de la musique électronique, mêlant techno, spoken-word et pop expérimentale pour créer un son unique. La productrice montréalaise s’est fait remarquer avec Perte d’identité et Working Class Woman (nommé au Polaris), explorant avec humour et intensité les dualités de la vie nocturne. En 2020, elle a élargi son univers avec Renegade Breakdown, pour des chansons pop expérimentales où elle chante pour la première fois. Son sixième album, City of Clowns, marque un retour audacieux à la scène club avec un son hybride mêlant techno, spoken-word et pop mélodique, reflétant ses racines pré-pandémie tout en évoluant vers de nouveaux thèmes, dont un regard critique sur les géants du numérique.

Marie Davidson is a fearless force in electronic music, blending techno, spoken-word, and experimental pop into a signature sound. The French-Canadian producer first gained attention with Perte d’identité and the Polaris-nominated Working Class Woman, exploring the dualities of nightlife with wit and intensity. In 2020, she expanded her sound on Renegade Breakdown, collaborating with Pierre Guerineau and Asaël Robitaille to craft experimental pop songs where she sang for the first time. Her sixth album, City of Clowns, marks a bold return to the club scene with a hybrid sound merging techno, spoken-word, and melodic pop, reflecting both pre-pandemic roots and an evolution shaped by new themes, including a critical take on Big Tech.

Asha

Asha est une force montante de la scène électronique montréalaise. Originaire de Toronto et profondément enracinée dans la culture caribéenne, elle puise dans son riche héritage musical pour créer des sets où se mêlent des sonorités lourdes en basses, percussives et polyrythmiques qui franchissent les frontières et les genres. Que ce soit en solo ou au sein du duo Runa and Asha, elle a forgé une identité sonore singulière, naviguant entre techno, bass, électro, breaks et plus encore. En dehors des platines, Asha est une organisatrice engagée et cofondatrice d’Ether, un collectif dédié à la mise en lumière des expressions contemporaines et diasporiques au sein de la musique bass.

Asha is a rising force in Montreal’s electronic music scene. Originally from Toronto but with deep Caribbean roots, her sets are a reflection of her rich musical upbringing—seamlessly fusing bass-heavy, percussion-driven, polyrhythmic sounds that transcend borders and genres. Whether solo or as one half of the DJ duo Runa and Asha, she’s carved out a distinct sound that moves fluidly between techno, bass, electro, breaks, and more. Beyond the booth, Asha is a dedicated organizer and co-founder of Ether, a collective committed to spotlighting contemporary and diasporic expressions within bass music.

Sanajiit ᓴᓇᔩᑦ (Inuit Makers) est une série documentaire de 13 épisodes qui offre au public une expérience immersive au cœur du processus créatif, de l’artisanat, des compétences et du quotidien des créateurs inuits du Nunavut. S’inspirant des conventions du genre « Slow TV », Sanajiit célèbre les rythmes et les réalités de la culture inuite, ainsi que le processus d’apprentissage traditionnel inuit, « apprendre par la pratique », avec les aînés, les membres de la communauté et une nouvelle génération d’Inuits. Produite en inuktitut et sous-titrée en anglais, Sanajiit favorise la préservation de la langue et l’accessibilité pour le public inuit, garantissant ainsi que ces histoires continueront à inspirer les générations à venir.

Arion Orchestre Baroque : Les larmes de Marie à la salle Bourgie

L’on vous promet autant de larmes de bonheur que de tristesse, et parfois les deux à la fois, lors de ce programme qui a comme point focal le nom Marie. Marie comme la mère du Christ au pied de la croix dans l’émouvante cantate Il pianto di Maria de Giuseppe Battista Ferrandini. Mais aussi comme dans le prénom de trois compositrices d’exception du XVIIIe siècle qui ont laissé leur marque à l’opéra – Grimani, Walpurgis et Agnesi – cette dernière nous offrant également un concerto pour clavecin. Pour ce programme Arion accueille la contralto Anthea Pichanick qui vous ravira assurément, et la cheffe et claveciniste Marie van Rhijn, à la carrière florissante, que nous accueillons toutes les deux pour la première fois à Montréal.

You are promised as many tears of joy as of sorrow, and sometimes both at once, in this program centered around the name Marie. Marie, as in the Mother of Christ at the foot of the cross in Giuseppe Battista Ferrandini’s moving cantata Il pianto di Maria. But also Marie as in the first name of three exceptional 18th-century women composers who left their mark on opera – Grimani, Walpurgis, and Agnesi – the latter also offering us a harpsichord concerto. For this program, Arion welcomes contralto Anthea Pichanick, who is sure to delight you, and conductor and harpsichordist Marie van Rhijn, whose flourishing career brings her to Montréal for the first time, along with Pichanick.

Dr. Rubinstein

Dr Rubinstein est le pseudonyme de l’artiste israélienne d’origine russe Marina Rubinstein. Depuis son installation à Berlin en 2012, ses performances et son style unique axé sur la rave se caractérisent par une énergie contagieuse, des sélections impeccables couvrant plusieurs genres et décennies, et des lignes de basse acid. Passionnée de vinyles, Dr Rubinstein se distingue depuis longtemps sur la scène musicale underground et s’est forgé une renommée internationale sans l’aide de la presse ni le soutien d’un label. Dr Rubinstein a fait de nombreuses tournées en Europe, aux États-Unis, en Amérique du Sud, en Asie et en Australie. Elle s’est produite dans des salles prestigieuses telles que Bassiani, BASEMENT NY, Fuse et De School, et participe régulièrement aux événements Klubnacht du Berghain. Dr. Rubinstein is the guise of Russian-born Israeli artist Marina Rubinstein. Since moving to Berlin in 2012, her unique rave-focused style and performance have been marked by infectious energy, impeccable selections spanning multiple genres and decades, and acid basslines. A vinyl-enthusiast at heart, Dr. Rubinstein has long stood out in the underground music scene and forged an international following without the press and backing of a label. Dr. Rubinstein has toured extensively throughout Europe, the United States, South America, Asia and Australia. She has performed at distinguished venues such as Bassiani, BASEMENT NY, Fuse and De School, as well as being a regular act at Berghain’s Klubnacht events. She has also headlined some of the major electronic music festivals including Dekmantel, Melt!, Sónar and Lowlands Festival. Dr. Rubinstein founded Quarantine FM, a live-streaming project where she invites other artists to play records in her home during the pandemic.

Safia Nihil

Safia Nihil est le nouveau projet musical des cofondateur·rice·s du label Chez Kito Kat, alias DBY et Shadya. Safia, prénom arabe musulman, est une ode à la sagesse, à la pureté et à la générosité, tandis que Nihil est le diminutif de nihilisme. Leurs compositions s’inspirent du downtempo lofi, du breakbeat, du jazz modal, de l’acid et de la musique traditionnelle maghrébine, utilisant des synthétiseurs modulaires, des boîtes à rythmes et des échos vintage pour créer des textures sonores riches et évolutives. Le duo, composé de DJ et de producteur.rice.s, a uni ses forces et ses énergies pour mettre en valeur les sons qui retracent leur parcours musical des 30 dernières années.

Safia Nihil is the new music project of Chez Kito Kat records cofounders, aka DBY and Shadya. Safia, an Arab-Muslim first name, is an ode to wisdom, purity and generosity, and Nihil, the diminutive of nihilism. Their sonic canvases draw their influences from downtempo lofi, breakbeat, modal jazz, acid, and traditional Maghreb music, using modular synthesizers, drum machines and vintage echoes to create rich evolving sonic textures. The duo, both DJs and producers, have joined forces and energies to highlight sounds that trace their musical journey over the past 30 years.

AGUMA

AGUMA réunit Guillaume Sauvé et Gabriel R. Drapeau, anciens collaborateurs du collectif audiovisuel EXPANSYS, présenté notamment à MUTEK Montréal. Leur nouveau projet, fondé sur des synthétiseurs modulaires, rend hommage à plusieurs genres tels que le fourth world, le dub et le jazz, en ajoutant des polyrythmies et des textures qui évoquent des paysages naturels. Sauvé, alias Sleeprunner, est un compositeur électronique montréalais mélangeant la techno ambiante, les textures et de l’IDM, reconnu pour ses albums Chasing Ghosts et Inorganica. Drapeau, connu comme Doc.Gazebo, fondateur de TechnoSynth, une boutique d’instruments électroniques, mèe une pratique audio-visuelle active. Depuis 2020, AGUMA a présenté ses œuvres à MUTEK, à la SAT et au festival ACT en Corée du Sud.

AGUMA brings together Guillaume Sauvé and Gabriel R. Drapeau, former collaborators of the EXPANSYS audiovisual collective, which has been featured at MUTEK Montreal, among other venues. Their new project, based on modular synthesizers, pays tribute to several genres such as Fourth world, Dub and Jazz, generating a set of polyrhythms and textures that evoke hazy and natural landscapes. Sauvé, aka Sleeprunner, is a Montreal-based electronic composer who blends ambient techno, textures and IDM, known for his albums Chasing Ghosts and Inorganica. Drapeau, known as Doc.Gazebo, founder of TechnoSynth, an electronic instrument store, is actively involved in audio-visual work. Since 2020, AGUMA has presented its work at MUTEK, SAT, and the ACT festival in South Korea.

GABA Collective takes over the dome for an electrifying night. On the lineup: three b2b sets from up-and-coming DJs putting the local scene in the spotlight, spanning hardgroove, disco house, UK Garage, and UKJ. Make way for a new generation of Montreal electronic artists, whose energetic sets will drag you straight onto the dancefloor. BRI

Publicitaire de jour et DJ de nuit, BRI est une artiste multidisciplinaire montréalaise. Plongée depuis maintenant 4 ans dans la scène musicale, elle réside actuellement auprès du collectif GABA. Influencée depuis toujours par le tech-house, le disco house et le UK garage, elle plonge ses foules dans un univers où le groove et les rythmes éclectiques se rencontrent.

A publicist by day and DJ by night, BRI is a multidisciplinary artist from Montréal. Immersed in the music scene for the past four years, she is currently a resident with the GABA collective. Long influenced by tech-house, disco house, and UK garage, she draws her crowds into a world where groove and eclectic rhythms meet.

NAË

Avec un style unique alliant des percussions avec de l’électro, des touches d’afro avec de la techno, NAË réussit à créer une atmosphère où il est difficile de quitter la piste de danse. Son approche musicale, ancrée dans la diversité culturelle, reflète son amour pour les sons du monde entier, tout en restant profondément connectée à la scène électronique moderne.

With a unique style blending percussion with electro, touches of afro with techno, NAË manages to create an atmosphere where it’s hard to leave the dance floor. Her musical approach, rooted in cultural diversity, reflects her love for sounds from around the world while remaining deeply connected to the modern electronic scene.

SCOTTIE

Hyperactif de nature, SCOTTIE insuffle une énergie contagieuse à chacun de ses sets, naviguant entre deep house progressive, tech explosif, et touches de UKG, hardgrooves et trance. Producteur passionné, il puise dans des sonorités alternatives et psychédéliques pour créer des morceaux surprenants et immersifs. Son univers, Darker Than Disco, fusionne l’esprit des années 80 avec des basses et percussions modernes.

Hyperactive by nature, SCOTTIE brings contagious energy to each of his sets, navigating between progressive deep house, explosive tech, and touches of UKG, hardgrooves, and trance. A passionate producer, he draws from alternative and psychedelic sounds to craft surprising, immersive tracks. His universe, Darker Than Disco, blends the spirit of the ’80s with modern basslines and percussion.

MARCOCCINO

Curieux de nature, MARCOCCINO explore la scène techno montréalaise à travers la lumière et le son. Après avoir façonné l’atmosphère de nombreuses raves avec ses installations lumineuses, il se tourne vers les platines pour créer des moments tout aussi vibrants. Amateur de techno bouncy et dansante, il cherche à faire voyager les corps autant que les esprits.

Curious by nature, MARCOCCINO explores Montréal’s techno scene through light and sound. After shaping the atmosphere of numerous raves with his lighting installations, he turned to the decks to create moments just as vibrant. A fan of bouncy, dance-driven techno, he aims to make bodies travel as much as minds.

DAMACADAM

DAMACADAM est un DJ montréalais reconnu pour ses performances énergiques et interactives, où le public devient partie prenante de l’expérience. Son style unique fusionne musique électronique et percussions latines, créant des sets vibrants et dansants. Actif sur la scène depuis plusieurs années, il s’est produit dans des lieux emblématiques comme Le Belmont, le MTELUS et l’Aire Commune. DAMACADAM brille par sa capacité à lire la foule et à créer des moments inoubliables, que ce soit en plein air ou en salle. Il est aussi à l’origine du collectif GABA, qui met en valeur les talents émergents montréalais à travers des événements variés.

Plongée dans la musique depuis son enfance, CHAR.L.N s’affirme sur la scène montréalaise avec un son ancré dans le groove et la techno. Inspirée par ses racines antillaises et des influences latines, elle insuffle dans chacun de ses sets une énergie brute, organique et authentique. Entre hardgroove et mental techno, CHAR.L.N crée des espaces où tension, puissance et fluidité se rencontrent, pour un son intense et immédiat. Derrière les platines, elle canalise une énergie viscérale, cherchant une connexion directe avec le public qui fait bouger les corps et ressentir la musique pleinement.

Immersed in music since childhood, CHAR.L.N has made her mark on Montréal’s scene with a sound rooted in groove and techno. Inspired by her Caribbean roots and Latin influences, she brings raw, organic, and authentic energy to each of her sets. Between hardgroove and mental techno, CHAR.L.N creates spaces where tension, power, and fluidity meet, delivering an intense and immediate sound. Behind the decks, she channels a visceral energy, seeking a direct connection with the audience that moves bodies and lets them fully feel the music.
