Collaborant avec des icônes comme William Parker et en tournée dans le rôle de Billie Holiday, la performance de Kim promet d’être émouvante. Sa poésie, présentée dans “Dreams Before Extinction”, met en évidence sa voix singulière.

Formé en 2022, The Wesleys réunit des membres venus de divers horizons. Leur premier EP de quatre chansons, sorti en 2022, a permis au groupe de faire son entrée sur la scène locale et au-delà du Québec. En septembre dernier, The Wesleys est retourné en studio, cette fois en collaboration avec Scott “Monty” Muro du groupe canadien Préoccupations, pour travailler sur son prochain album, prévu pour mars 2025.

Formed in early 2022, Montreal The Wesleys are a rock band known for their electrifying blend of heart and adrenaline. Following the release of their debut EP Outside Voices, the band quickly made a name for themselves in the Montreal music scene with their distinctive sound, thoughtful rock ‘n’ roll meditations on the human condition. In 2025, they’ll release, their anticipated follow-up on Petit Village Records.

Alex Walton

Lex Walton est une musicienne de 24 ans, cinéaste, poétesse en prose, menuisière amateur, troubadour névrosée du cœur, survivante de l’âme du rock and roll, et autrice de The Sound Rocker’s Prayer. Elle a sorti 7 singles, 3 EPs et 4 albums complets au cours des deux dernières années (y compris une collaboration avec Ezra Furman), tous musicalement disparates mais empreints de la même frénésie amoureuse, pleine d’accroches, et d’une hyperconfessionnalité effrontée. Aussi étonnamment beaux qu’ils sont déchirants, ses disques témoignent d’une tension viscérale. Ils ont été décrits comme étant « juste trop », tandis que ses performances live sont qualifiées de « terrifiantes ». On ressent un désespoir palpable, où tout semble mis en jeu, comme si seule la grâce de Dieu pouvait empêcher cet avion de s’écraser.

Lex Walton is a 24 year old musician, filmmaker, prose poet, amateur carpenter, neurotic troubadour of the heart, rock and roll soul survivor, and author of “the sound rocker’s prayer.” It/she has released 7 singles, 3 EPs, and 4 full length albums in the last 2 years (including a collaboration with Ezra Furman), all musically disparate but charged with the same kind of hook-laden lovestruck mania and brazen hyperconfessionality, as stunningly beautiful as they are acts of bitter teeth gnashing. Its/her records have been described as “just too much” and her live performance as “terrifying,” one gets the feeling of desperation, that everything is put on the line and only the grace of god can keep this plane from crashing.

The Nikolas L. B. Brigade

The Nikolas L. B. Brigade est le groupe de scène itinérant du chanteur et multi-instrumentiste montréalais Nikolas L. B. Animée par une passion pour l’exploration lyrique, l’écriture de L. God’s Mom est le fruit de la collaboration entre l’artiste canadienne Bria Salmena et le producteur et cinéaste A. Matthews. Inspiré par les traditions musicales enracinées dans l’héritage italien de Salmena et la vie nocturne de Toronto, le duo réimagine les traditions vocales ancestrales de Salmena en un portrait déformé du présent, plein de mantras, d’affirmations enflammées et de confessions personnelles.

God’s Mom is the collaboration of Canadian artist Bria Salmena with producer and filmmaker A. Matthews. Inspired by musical traditions rooted in Salmena’s Italian heritage and Toronto’s nightlife, the duo reimagine Salmena’s ancestral vocal traditions into a distorted portrait of the present; full of mantras, fiery assertions, and personal confessions.

Puggy Beales

Puggy Beales évoque « une fête dans l’obscurité »… une rave dans un sous-sol de quartier, où les kicks percutants et les grooves de basse profonds vous guident à travers la brume âcre des machines à fumée et les stroboscopes éclatants. Les synthés scintillants contrastent avec une tonalité gothique dans un monde où les contradictions peuvent s’harmoniser. Les paroles poignantes de Puggy sont servies avec un rictus sombre, dépeignant la tension entre la course effrénée du jour et les ruelles obscures du soir. C’est de la musique de danse faite d’ingrédients punk, une célébration face au désespoir, une insistance implacable à vivre sa vérité qui hurle fort contre une culture de consommation de masse.

Puggy Beales evokes “a party in the dark”… a neighbourhood basement rave, where thumping kick and deep bass grooves guide you through the acrid fog machine and bright strobe. Sparkling synths contrast a gothy undertone in a world where contradictions can harmonize. Puggy’s poignant lyricism is served with a brooding sneer, depicting the tension between the rat race of day and the dark alleyways of evening. This is dance music from punk ingredients, this is a celebration in the face of despair, an unrelenting insistence to live your truth that shouts loud against a mass consumer culture.

FLUX | Lori Goldston’s intense and intimate cello

You may have heard her alongside David Byrne, Terry Riley, Malcolm Goldstein, Natasha Atlas, Threnody Ensemble or Nirvana at the famous Unplugged concert in 1993. Her name is Lori Goldston, and she composes/improvises, teaches, writes, and campaigns for a new way of making “artful” music. The Seattle-based musician was at La Sotterenea last night for a concert that also featured Montreal guitarist Stefan Christoff, Lebanese-Palestinian-Quebec author Elissa Kayal and singer/harpist Christelle Saint-Julien. The concert was part of the program of Montreal’s new Flux festival, which focuses on alternative music of all kinds: contemporary classical, improvised, indie, rock, experimental, electro and more. FLUX CONCERTS, INFO AND TICKET

The performance of poor Christelle Saint-Julien, plagued by all kinds of technical sound problems, will have to be passed over. She accompanied herself on harp (Montreal is definitely a world center for “Indie” harpists!) with a fragile voice that was nonetheless capable of more solid lyrical outbursts. The highlights of the evening were provided by Elissa Kayal, who opened the show with a powerful text about uprooting, identity and the misery of an entire people (Palestinian). Powerful phrases such as “La tristesse, je la pisse hors de moi!” (Sadness, I piss it out of me!) ensured an emotionally powerful first contact with the evening’s program.

Lori Goldston herself took to the stage with her cello and embarked on a tour of just a few pieces, albeit of considerable length, all mostly improvised in a rather modal language that is more or less always developed in the same tessitura of around two octaves. Through this seemingly straightforward approach, the artist’s ultra-solid classical technique shines through. Interchanging textures between generous bowing and voluble pizzicato, Goldston musically invites us into a visceral and emotionally expansive personal universe. That said, there’s nothing abrasive or aggressive about her style of contemporary art music improvisation. Rather, it’s an open door to a vibrantly intense and, dare I say it, somewhat romantic interior.

Guitarist Stefan Christoff joined Goldston at the end of the concert. The meeting of Goldston’s lyrical cello and Christoff’s soaring, ethereal electric guitar brought the evening to a close as if on a cushion of meditative ambiance. Very beautiful.

In the same spirit, I invite you to discover Goldston and Christoff’s album A Radical Horizon, released earlier this year. Even if Christoff is on piano rather than guitar, you’ll feel much the same as we did last night.

Christelle et Stefan apparaissent tou.te.s deux sur la compilation qui sera publiée en collaboration avec Small Scale Music. Il y aura également une vente d’art imprimé lors de cet événement qui permettra de récolter des fonds supplémentaires pour la station de radio palestinienne.

This concert will mark the launch of a benefit compilation in support of the Palestinian radio project Radio alHara based in occupied Palestine in Bethlehem. Both Christelle and Stefan appear on the compilation that will be released in collaboration with Small Scale Music. Art prints will be available for purchase to raise additional funds for the Palestinian radio station.
This concert is co-presented and supported by Academics for Palestine at Concordia University.
This concert will also be the Montréal launch for the 2024 duet album A Radical Horizon, with Lori Goldston on cello and Stefan Christoff on piano, released by Beacon Sound in Portland.

Stefan Christoff

Stefan Spirodon Christoff est un créateur de médias, un activiste communautaire et un artiste vivant à Montréal. Stefan anime l’émission Free City Radio, diffusée chaque semaine sur sept stations de radio communautaires au Canada et partagée mondialement en podcast (Spotify + Apple Podcasts). Stefan réalise de la musique avec de nombreuses personnes à travers le monde, notamment Rêves sonores, Sam Shalabi, Lori Goldston, Adriana Camancho et Anarchist Mountains. Stefan est membre du conseil d’administration du Centre des travailleurs immigrants de Côte-Des-Neiges et organise des événements avec le réseau Cinema Politica. Stefan travaille avec le Centre de justice sociale et est également étudiant à la maîtrise en histoire à l’Université Concordia.

Stefan Spirodon Christoff is a media maker, community activist and artist living in Montréal. Stefan hosts the program Free City Radio, broadcasting weekly on seven community radio stations in Canada and shared globally as a podcast (Spotify + Apple Podcasts). Stefan makes music with many people globally, including Rêves sonores, Sam Shalabi, Lori Goldston, Adriana Camancho and Anarchist Mountains. Stefan is on the board of the Immigrant Workers Centre in Côte-Des-Neiges and organises with Cinema Politica Network. Stefan works with the Social Justice Centre and is also a graduate student in history at Concordia University.
