Montreal-based experimental rock trio Suuns blend aspects of dark electro, dissonant art rock, and plodding indie rock in a constantly shifting sound. The band toured extensively, and their foggy, amorphous style of song construction grew more sophisticated over the course of albums like 2016’s Hold/Still and 2021’s The Witness.

Le trio montréalais de rock expérimental Suuns mélange des aspects d’électro sombre, d’art rock dissonant et d’indie rock laborieux dans un son en constante évolution. Le groupe a fait de nombreuses tournées et son style brumeux et amorphe de construction de chansons est devenu plus sophistiqué au fil d’albums comme Hold/Still en 2016 et The Witness en 2021.

Activity are an avant four-piece featuring Travis Johnson, and drummer Steve Levine, both from the band Grooms, bassist Bri DiGioia, and guitarist Jess Rees from Russian Baths. Produced by engineer Jeff Berner of Psychic TV, their music forms a casually menacing framework for lyrical themes of paranoia, exposed character flaws, and the broader human capacity for growth when an ugly truth is laid bare.

DahL is an experimental pop outfit based in Montreal who combine elements of 90’s trip hop, post-punk, and art rock in their music. They create a foundation of syncopated rhythm and sonic texture to form fluid structures that find their cadence through space, patience, and story. The past few months they have been releasing singles in preparation for their forthcoming album “That’s It,” due in March 2024.

Fleece are a Canadian indie rock band, originating from Montreal. It consists of Matt Rogers, Megan Ennenberg, Jameson Daniel, and Ethan Soil. They released their first album Scavenger in 2015, and gained notoriety when Rogers’ and Soil’s “how to write an Alt-J song” went viral on YouTube in May 2015.

Katie Bull Trio and Dream Keepers at Sala Rossa

Katie Bull is a New York City-based jazz singer who brings an interesting variety of influences to her performances. Bull has been influenced by the subtle, understated vocalists of the Cool School, including Helen Merrill and June Christy, but she has also been influenced by more cerebral artists such as Sheila Jordan, Jeanne Lee, and Betty Carter. At times, elements of Ella Fitzgerald can be found in Bull’s singing. And when one adds all of these influences up, the end result is a recognizable singer who is talented in her own right; someone who is effective as both a scat singer and an interpreter of other people’s lyrics. Depending on the mood she is in, Bull can be either abstract or warmly vulnerable.

Katie Bull est une chanteuse de jazz basée à New York qui apporte une variété intéressante d’influences à ses performances. Elle a été influencée par les chanteuses subtiles et discrètes de la Cool School, notamment Helen Merrill et June Christy, mais aussi par des artistes plus cérébrales telles que Sheila Jordan, Jeanne Lee et Betty Carter. On retrouve parfois des éléments d’Ella Fitzgerald dans le chant de Bull. Lorsque l’on additionne toutes ces influences, le résultat final est une chanteuse reconnaissable et talentueuse, qui est efficace à la fois comme chanteuse de scat et comme interprète des paroles d’autrui. Selon son humeur, Bull peut être abstraite ou chaleureusement vulnérable.

Taverne Tour : Sweeping Promises, Dana et Feeling Figures à la Sala Rossa

Sweeping Promises are Lira Mondal and Caufield Schnug. A chance meeting in Arkansas led to a decade of playing in an eclectic assortment of projects together. Bass playing Lira is an emotive bolt of thunderous energy with the iconic blast of a girl group rolled into one robust throat. Caufield is an intentional guitar player and drummer. No note or hit is extraneous. Together they are meticulous sound engineers, using space as a key ingredient to their distinct sound.

Sweeping Promises sont Lira Mondal et Caufield Schnug. Une rencontre fortuite dans l’Arkansas a débouché sur une décennie de projets éclectiques. Lira, qui joue de la basse, est un éclair émotif d’énergie tonitruante, avec le souffle emblématique d’un groupe de filles, le tout réuni dans une seule et même voix robuste. Caufield est un guitariste et un batteur intentionnel. Aucune note ou coup n’est superflu. Ensemble, ils sont des ingénieurs du son méticuleux, utilisant l’espace comme ingrédient clé de leur son distinct.

The increasingly inventive DANA was formed by singer/theremin player Madeline Jackson, in an effort they describe as “purely survival driven” in 2016. Dubbed a “Band to Watch” and the best band in Ohio”, DANA is ever earnest, always fun, chaotic and cathartic, with a live show that is something to behold. DANA “live to push the envelope of sonic manipulation, pulling apart weirdo hardcore and bombastic rock ‘n’ roll to create their own brand of punk” (Post Trash).

L’ inventif groupe DANA a été formé par la chanteuse/joueuse de theremin Madeline Jackson dans un effort qu’elles décrivent comme “purement axé sur la survie” en 2016. Appelé un “Band to Watch” et “le meilleur groupe de l’Ohio”, DANA est toujours sérieux, amusant, chaotique et cathartique – un spectacle en direct qui est quelque chose à voir. Feeling Figures have tinkered away at the edge of the Montreal scene, never fitting neatly into the ebb and flow of the city’s cultural trends or its more traditionalist camps. A geographer, a music therapist, a writer, and an underground arts biz maverick, the four “Figures” have long been friends and collaborators in various musical formations and continue to propel multiple projects.

Un géographe, une musicothérapeute, un écrivain et un marginal de l’art underground, les quatre “Figures” sont depuis longtemps des amis et des collaborateurs dans diverses formations musicales et continuent de propulser de multiples projets.

Yonatan Gat is a guitarist, producer and composer, initially known as the leader of garage rock group Monotonix. His solo pieces have been mentioned by the likes of The New York Times, Pitchfork, Vice, The New Yorker People Magazine. His music transcends and surpasses genres, falling somewhere between rock’n’roll, avant-garde and performing arts.

All Hands_Make Light is a Canadian experimental noise-pop duo, made up of singer Ariel Engle (also behind the La Force project) and instrumentalist Efrim Menuck. The intention behind the project was to keep things simple, with no pressure, giving Menuck the opportunity to explore noise pedals and synthesizer drones, while Engle transforms her voice and lyrics. AH_ML’s album, Darling The Dawn, is available via Constellation Records.

All Hands_Make Light est un duo noise-pop expérimental canadien, composé de la chanteuse Ariel Engle (aussi derrière le projet La Force) et de l’instrumentiste Efrim Menuck. L’intention derrière le projet était de garder les choses simples, sans pression, donnant à Menuck l’occasion d’explorer les pédales de bruit et les drones de synthétiseur, pendant qu’Engle transforme sa voix et ses paroles. POP Montréal : Vanille et Aline Winant

Vanille est le projet de l’auteure-compositrice-interprète Rachel Leblanc. Oscillant entre folk d’inspiration 60s et chanson française, les chansons de Vanille plongent l’auditeur dans un monde onirique bordé de forêts denses et de drames amoureux. Son deuxième album La clairière, orné d’arrangements raffinés et de mélodies intemporelles, a vu le jour le 3 février dernier sur l’étiquette indépendante Bonbonbon.

Vanille is the project of singer-songwriter Rachel Leblanc. Oscillating between 60s-inspired folk and French chanson, Vanille’s songs plunge listeners into a dreamlike world of dense forests and love dramas. Her second album, La clairière, with its refined arrangements and timeless melodies, was released on February 3 on the independent Bonbonbon label.

Aline Winant est une musicienne et comédienne basée à Montréal. En 2023, elle sort Suddenly Everyone’s a Stagner in my Family, un premier Ep bilingue français/anglais de chansons folks aux accents ondine.

POP Montréal | Lancement d’album de Laurence-Anne

Laurence-Anne est une autodidacte. Dès le début de son adolescence, elle apprend la guitare et compose ses premières chansons. Inspirée par Feist, l’artiste opte d’abord pour un créneau indie folk minimaliste, avant de tanguer vers une approche plus rock lorsqu’elle débarque à Montréal. La jeune vingtenaire troque alors l’acoustique contre l’électrique et fait sa place jusqu’à la finale des Francouvertes, en 2017. Deux ans plus tard, son album Première apparition atteint la longue liste du prestigieux prix Polaris et le sommet du palmarès des albums francophones de l’année à CISM.

Laurence-Anne is a self-taught singer and guitarist who was a teenager when she wrote her first songs. The young woman was inspired by Feist and at first was really drawn towards a minimalist indie folk sound. Once she arrived in Montreal, she started leaning towards a more rock sound. She traded her acoustic guitar for an electric one, and in 2017 landed herself in the Francouvertes finals. Two years later, her first album Première apparition was longlisted for the prestigious Polaris Prize, and reached the top of CISM’s year-end best-of chart for French albums.

Suoni Per Il Popolo: Matana Roberts + White People Killed Them + Alison Burik à la Sala Rossa

En compagnie de personnalités de la scène locale, Matana Roberts revient avec le quatrième chapitre de sa série Coin Coin, qui a été acclamée par la critique. Ce projet a reçu les plus grandes acclamations pour son originalité et sa puissance narrative. Les trois premiers albums Coin Coin, sortis entre 2011 et 2015, exploraient la composition moderne/avant par le biais de divers ensembles, en se concentrant sur les héritages de la traite des esclaves américaine et les sujets non masculins. Dans Coin Coin Chapter Four : Memphis, l’album se déploie comme une œuvre continue de musique de libération du XXIe siècle, mêlant incantations méditatives, thèmes mélodiques et improvisation libre. La direction d’orchestre de Roberts et sa pratique unique de la partition graphique guident les compositions, qui intègrent leur jeu de saxophone et de clarinette, ainsi que leur chant et des textes issus de recherches historiques et d’écrits personnels.

White People Killed Them est un projet collaboratif formé par Raven Chacon (Chacon est devenu le premier Amérindien à remporter le prix Pulitzer de musique pour sa Voiceless Mass en 2022), John Dieterich et Marshall Trammell. Leur musique combine l’improvisation libre, le noise rock et le rock expérimental. Le projet est un appel à l’action, exhortant les fans à se battre pour la démocratie, la justice, la liberté et la créativité.

Alison Burik est une saxophoniste, clarinettiste et compositrice montréalaise. Sa musique explore les possibilités sonores des bois grâce à l’utilisation de l’électronique et de microphones de contact, ce qui donne lieu à des paysages sonores terrestres et extraterrestres.

Joined by local luminaries, Matana Roberts returns with the fourth chapter in her critically acclaimed Coin Coin series. This project has received the highest acclaim for its originality and narrative power. The first three Coin Coin albums, released between 2011 and 2015, explored modern/avant composition through various ensembles, focusing on legacies of the American slave trade and non-male subjects. In Coin Coin Chapter Four: Memphis, the album unfolds as a continuous work of 21st-century liberation music, blending meditative incantations, melodic themes and free improvisation. Roberts’ conducting and unique practice of graphic scoring guide the compositions, which incorporate their saxophone and clarinet playing, as well as their singing and texts drawn from historical research and personal writings.

White People Killed Them is a collaborative project formed by Raven Chacon (Chacon became the first Native American to win the Pulitzer Prize for music for his Voiceless Mass in 2022), John Dieterich and Marshall Trammell. Their music combines free improvisation, noise rock and experimental rock. The project is a call to action, urging fans to fight for democracy, justice, freedom and creativity.

Alison Burik is a Montreal-based saxophonist, clarinettist and composer. Her music explores the sonic possibilities of woodwinds through the use of electronics and contact microphones, resulting in both terrestrial and extraterrestrial soundscapes.
