by Rédaction PAN M 360

A musical theatre inspired by the life and work of Clémence Desrochers.
In a poetic and delicate world, we rediscover the work of the one whose first name alone is enough, at the heart of a small garden where her creativity blossoms. Marked by her aunts, her mother, many inspiring women, and even her father, Clémence created her most beautiful songs and her most powerful and universal writings from this rich and personal universe. It is an opportunity for the public to discover or rediscover this voice of love from a different angle—through the full vulnerability and nostalgia of Clémence!
Big Raymonde, Bertha the Round, Nicole, Armande, Middle Drienne, colored pencils, musical notes, glasses of white wine—they all take turns emerging from the prolific garden she lovingly cultivates. Women who speak of those who came before and those who will follow. Like a natural renewal, an improbable turning point!

A Big Band of Strings and Saxophones Celebrates Charlie Parker

by Michel Labrecque

Upon entering the Fifth Hall of Place des Arts, twenty minutes before the concert, the string ensemble was already in a state of high excitement: the instruments were tuning, practicing scales and twirling around.

The National Jazz Orchestra transformed itself into a string ensemble, as it sometimes does. This particular occasion was to pay tribute to Charlie Parker with Strings, that rare moment when, between 1949 and 1951, the great bebop saxophonist recorded with a string ensemble. A moment that marked history at the time.

To commemorate this event, the ONJ pulled out all the stops: on stage were some twenty violinists, violists and cellists, accompanied by a harpist, an oboist and an English horn player. In addition, there was a rhythm section with drums, bass, guitar and piano.

The musical director for that evening, Samuel Blais, told me in an interview that Charlie Parker, aka Bird, had never had such a large ensemble. At the time, the producer wanted to save money, so it was a small string ensemble that collaborated with the great saxophonist.

To portray Charlie Parker, Samuel Blais called upon regulars from the ONJ: the excellent Montreal saxophonists Jean-Pierre Zanella, Rémi Bolduc, André Leroux and Alexandre Côté. Each of them had their moment of dialogue with the string ensemble.

How can I put it simply? It all sounded fantastic! It was fluid and rich. The ONJ meticulously respected the original arrangements, but the saxophonists had the freedom to improvise, without trying to copy Parker. Of course, you have to appreciate the style of the era. The strings sometimes sound like a soundtrack from a Walt Disney film. But it’s finely arranged, and in these dreary times, it adds a little color to our lives.

Don’t even ask me which of the four soloists was the best. Each had their own unique sound. And that’s perfectly fine.

Finally, the four musicians reunited on stage and indulged in a series of solos, accompanied by the rhythm section, for a final piece. The string and wind orchestra, almost entirely composed of women, tapped their feet and smiled.

In the room, we were doing the same thing….

It was a very nice evening, sold out, although around me there were a few empty seats.

The ONJ’s next event will be dedicated to Ellington. On January 15, 2026, Kim Richardson will sing Duke Ellington, conducted by Marianne Trudel. Happy New Year!

FMA 2025 | Cantiques de l’amour, Between East and West

by Sandra Gasana

Thirty-six choir members. Seven musicians. A musical director. A whirling dervish. And of course, there were the two stars of the evening: Syrian singer Khaled Al-Hafez and Quebec contralto Gabrielle Cloutier.

The Fifth Hall at Place des Arts was almost full, but this time, unlike the other concerts of the Arab World Festival, there was a predominantly Quebec audience, mostly older, the families of the choir members were probably numerous.

The choir, composed of the Vox Ensemble, provided a backdrop. It returned between the songs performed sometimes by Khaled, sometimes by Gabrielle, and sometimes by both. In fact, Gabrielle sang in Arabic for Khaled’s songs and in French for her own. Dressed in a long red dress, she stood out in the hall, as everyone else was dressed in black. Her voice was breathtaking, especially when she stood in the middle of the stage and let it out freely.

Khaled’s chants had the feel of prayers, a bit like those that resonate through mosques, while the choir immersed us in the atmosphere of a church service. And we waltzed between these two worlds throughout the evening. Before the end of the first part, we saw the whirling dervish arrive and illuminate the room with his spinning meditation. He seemed completely in a trance, and all the while, I wondered how he didn’t get dizzy at the end of it all.

The musicians each had their turn to shine. They made sure to take their time during their solos, without rushing, so that the audience could enjoy it to the very end.

Images were projected throughout the evening, sometimes letters of the Arabic alphabet, other times geometric images or decorations that blended well with the music.

I would say the only drawback was perhaps the length of the concert. A spectator sitting very close to me thought the show was over at the intermission, since we had just enjoyed an hour and a half of performance. The second half was admittedly a bit shorter, but for fans of this kind of music, they were well served.

Festival du monde Arabe : Ya Ghorbati | Lila Borsali à la Cinquième Salle

by Rédaction PAN M 360

“When destinies intersect, when journeys converge, when life stories—written by those who have truly lived them—echo one another, one need only follow the path to find oneself, as if standing before a mirror!” — Lila Borsali
Through the delicate beauty of her mesmerising voice, Lila Borsali breathes new life into Ya Ghorbati, a centuries-old chant pulsating with the painful memory of exile. More than a performer, Borsali is a singer-researcher, a conduit of ancient souls who guides listeners on an emotional journey of poignant ruptures and parallel destinies. Like the echoes of a familiar refrain, her music evokes the nostalgia of childhood and the aching absence of loved ones.
Borsali’s songs transform ancestral sorrow into a radiant vessel, navigating the turbulent waters of fracture and resilience and offering reflections of our own personal journeys.
Ya Ghorbati is a sacred threshold where music speaks the language of the heart and exile leads toward a horizon bathed in light.

Martin Levac | Répertoire de Genesis à la Cinquième Salle

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Very few musicians and bands have ventured to reproduce the entire music of the English band Genesis. In this concert, four seasoned musicians and Genesis enthusiasts promise you a magical moment in the musical universe of the iconic band. Initially progressive rock, complex and theatrical, their repertoire transformed to become more melodic and romantic with drummer-singer Phil Collins. Shortly before the band officially broke up, the trio of Banks, Rutherford, and Collins was firmly rooted in pop-rock. True to the 80s, their sound had evolved to incorporate synthesizers and Phil Collins’ signature drum fills, with songs enjoying worldwide success. Four dedicated musicians perform iconic songs from the entire Genesis repertoire, from 1971 to 1991. Respecting the spirit and sounds that characterize each era, from Nursery Cryme to We Can’t Dance, the quartet explores and delivers a high-caliber performance without costumes or stage effects. Like a classical concert, and with the utmost fidelity to the sound textures, arrangements, intensity, and all the musical subtleties of the original work are recreated. This unique show is led by Martin Levac, a Genesis fan for over 35 years, who is accompanied on stage by Jean-François Duchesne on keyboards, Marc Girard on bass, and François Larouche on guitars.

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Immerse yourself in Canticles of Love, a musical tapestry born from an improbable encounter between the captivating singer Khaled Al-Hafez, a keeper of the Levant’s heritage; the magical contralto Gabrielle Cloutier, whose voice maps the contours of inner landscapes; the spirited energy of Ensemble Vox choir, guardian of sacred harmonies, and Crow’s whirlwind of grace and light.
In this performance, ancient and contemporary love songs echo and intertwine—from age-old prayers and mystical romances to profoundly moving poetry. Khaled Al-Hafez’s velvet voice weaves a luminous thread between 14th-century qasidas and age-old melodies. Meanwhile, Gabrielle Cloutier, backed by the Ensemble Chamade and Ensemble Vox, unleashes a powerful, expansive energy, blending vocal traditions from Québec and beyond.
Embark on a journey spanning vast deserts and soaring cathedrals, where love itself is a ritual to be celebrated. It’s a performance that builds sonic bridges between continents and across eras, lifting the soul to new heights of ecstasy.

Garou solo à la Cinquième Salle

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Alone on stage, Garou is back on the road with his piano and guitar, accompanying himself with a variety of technologies.
Garou released Un meilleur lendemain in April 2025, his very first album as a songwriter. The artist picked up the pen because he had things to say! The result: ten deeply personal songs, crafted first and foremost for the stage, marking a fresh start and unveiling a new musical vision. After years of sonic exploration in residence at his studio, his new show Garou solo is an invitation, through song, into a cinematic and theatrical universe.
In this retrospective, at once autobiographical and eclectic, he tells, in words and music, the story of a life both wild and extraordinary: unforgettable experiences, moments of solitude in nature, deep friendships, and the richness of love that surrounds him. Revisiting more than 30 years of career, he performs his classic hits alongside new works in an elegant production enhanced by an image-driven scenography.
