Festival du monde Arabe : Lena Chamamyan à la Cinquième Salle

by Rédaction PAN M 360

For her long-anticipated return to the FMA, singer-songwriter Lena Chamamyan promises nothing less than a sensory odyssey. Her crystalline, captivating vocals move effortlessly between the tenderness of a caress and the fervour of prayer. With lyrics steeped in poetry, her songs pay tribute to the beauty of everyday life, the aching nostalgia of exile, and the unyielding hope that beats at the heart of adversity.
Under the lights of the Cinquième Salle, Chamamyan invites audiences on a journey where the whispers of inner voices unfold into a collective hymn and music becomes a beacon of hope. Accompanied by an ensemble of seasoned musicians, Chamamyan enchants with unique arrangements — at once highly refined and immediately familiar — where the hypnotic pulse of the oud, the intricate embellishments of the piano, and melodies born of distant horizons weave together to form new and unexpected patterns.
Throw wide the gates of wonder and enter the world of this unique artist, whose message is one of light and love. Lena awaits, ready to offer a moment of escape and beauty, led by a vibrant voice of timeless emotion.

Louis-Jean Cormier à la Cinquième Salle

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Et ça me manquait.

This new show is a return to our roots. A desire to go in the opposite direction from Karkwa’s last tour, to get away from the noise and rediscover the essence of the musician I am and his creations. Obviously, I’ll be delving back into the repertoire of my solo career, but I’ll also be delving into the bins and memories of my youth to reinvent a number of songs by other artists. When I’m alone on stage, there’s a deep connection with you. It’s a symbiosis that has no equal… And I missed that.

Francos de Montréal : Émile Bilodeau | Bill aux Îles à la Cinquième Salle

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Émile Bilodeau invites you to discover the world of this sixth album and rediscover his previous hits in a solo show where the visual atmosphere will match the musical creation. Recorded in front of an audience at the venue Aux Pas Perdus in the Magdalen Islands during the summer of 2024, the result is unique: Bill aux Îles, a live album featuring a one-man band, where simple, catchy melodies meet the technical complexity required to master percussion, chord progressions, and mouth harp solos all at once. In addition to lyrics that reflect the 29-year-old singer-songwriter’s personality—confident, colorful, and entertaining.

Nouvel Ensemble Moderne | New Songs for a New Era

by Judith Hamel

The Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (NEM) is writing the first pages of a new book in this 2024-2025 season, divided into three chapters and driven by the wind of renewal of Jean-Michaël Lavoie, who succeeds Lorraine Vaillancourt after 35 years at the helm of the chamber orchestra. For the second chapter of three this season, the NEM invites us to the Cinquième salle at Place des arts for a concert in collaboration with the Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal.

Entitled Chapitre 2 – Des airs nouveaux, this afternoon concert featured a repertoire equally divided between three Quebec composers and Korean composer Unsuk Chin. Upon entering the foyer, the audience was greeted by a mediation team led by Irina Kirchberg, visiting professor at the Université de Montréal, which included a recording device for superimposing spectators’ voices, as well as an interactive panel in the form of a memory game inviting them to discover more about the works on the program.

The concert then opened with José Evangelista’s Vision, a piece for small ensemble and mezzo-soprano with a mystical aura. Brazilian singer Camila Montefusco brilliantly interpreted this work, which highlights the composer’s Spanish origins and multiple influences.

This was followed by Claude Vivier’s Bouchara, a long love song sung entirely in an invented language. Soprano Chelsea Kolić, buoyed by the expressiveness of the writing, gave us the impression of understanding her message, even as it eluded us. So we don’t need to speak the language to understand love.

In the second half, Luna Pearl Woolf’s Orpheus on Sappho’s Shore impressed with the rich voice of countertenor Ian Sabourin, who deftly navigated his multiple registers.

Finally, the NEM offered Unsuk Chin’s Cantatrix Sopranica, the only piece outside Canada on the program. Written for two sopranos, a countertenor and ensemble, it was performed here by Chelsea Kolić, Ariadne Lih and Bridget Esler, three sopranos whose timbres intertwine perfectly in this texturally fascinating work. Chin explores the very act of singing, summoning vocal warm-ups, role-playing and unexpected reversals between singers and musicians. Its fragmented writing makes it a hyper-vocal work in which the orchestral ensemble extends and magnifies the voices. Accessible and complex at the same time, blending virtuosity, humor and emotion, this piece is a perfect match for the NEM’s new direction.

The collaboration between the Atelier lyrique and the NEM has been a success. The commitment of the young singers, with their expressive, precise voices, blends very well with the spirit of the NEM.

Jean-Michaël Lavoie conducts with such fluidity. When the lights illuminate the musicians’ work, we can at the same time deconstruct every little intention of the conductor, seeing with clarity the variations of suppleness in these gestures. In this way, the NEM is in good hands.

For their next concert, we’re lucky not to have to wait too long. On May 10, they’ll be at Salle Pierre-Mercure, presenting Chapitre 3 – Dérive 2 Pierre Boulez.

ONJ | Tirolien with Strings Brings Down the House

by Vitta Morales

I will waste no time in saying that Malika Tirolien with the ONJ was among the best concerts I’ve been assigned. It is only February, but I suspect it will go down as one of my favorite shows of the year. And the reason why it boils down to this: Tirolien and company treated us to fantastic performances of solidly crafted songs that were then elevated by great arranging from Jean-Nicolas Trottier.

Tirolien, armed with a rhythm section, three backup singers, a string orchestra, and horns, performed songs from her 2021 album Higher, in addition to a few other selections from a separate project called Gemini Crab. Already, the songs from Higher in their original form are groovy, synth heavy, and high energy. (Due in part, no doubt, to it being co-produced by Michael League of Snarky Puppy). In an interview with Tirolien, our colleague Varun Swarup quite astutely wondered how much more grandiose these songs could get. This would be answered immediately. These arrangements, and in particular their use of strings, equated to a lightness and floating quality in the more gentle moments of the music, but they were equally up to the task of adding a satisfying density and dissonance when required. As concerns the horns, they provided some heft and weight, making the groovier moments even more so. In the words of Tirolien herself, Jean-Nicolas “found a way to elevate the music without losing its core identity.”

Musically, the show and compositions had a bit of everything. Quintuplet grooves, 12/8 shuffle, synth lead solos, a saxophone battle, politically fueled rap, belted high notes, creative tempo changes, a shredding guitar solo, and even some light choreography were all seen before the night was over. And, most importantly, it all worked. It really worked. Going over my notes, I looked to see if there were any fair criticisms that were worth mentioning. In the end, I decided that including any nitpicks would feel a bit forced. And this is because my takeaway from the evening wasn’t “Wow, what a great show; but it would have been nice to clean up elements X, Y, and Z.” Rather, my takeaway was, “Wow, what an exceptional show from all involved.”

by Jacob Langlois-Pelletier

With its highly original formation, Chausson’s Concert is at the crossroads of chamber music and concerto. Oscillating between tension and delicate charm, this work is imbued with powerful lyricism. As for Debussy, he winks at Spain, entrusting the cello with stylized evocations of the guitar in his highly inventive Sonata for cello and piano.
