A seasoned multi-instrumentalist, excellent singer, very good arranger, top-notch lo-fi producer, talented lyricist, conductor, improviser, and architect of an absolutely unique soundscape, Yves Jarvis has followed an atypical path to weld all the metals together, screw and glue all the wood, and produce a framework as solid as that suggested by the album All Cylinders, winner of the 2025 Polaris Prize. A true grower, this initially dense opus conceals a coherence and a wow factor that gradually reveals itself with each listen. One observes the maturity achieved, the coherence of the musical discourse within this apparent bric-a-brac, the order of which is revealed with repeated listens. Orchestral folk, choral singing, psychedelia, soul/R&B, jazz, rock, folk, prog, choral singing—all accompanied by exquisite instrumentation. Wrapped in subtle orchestrations, the groove is excellent from beginning to end, with Jarvis’s delicate, slightly veiled vocals lending sweetness and sensuality to all his compositions. Like the most prominent self-producers, one-man bands, and arrangers in the pop world, this Montreal artist has meticulously crafted every aspect of his work, carefully weaving together all the components of his multifaceted art and thus achieving remarkable mastery. Few Canadian artists can boast of having reached this exceptional level.
