Montreal’s Robert Robert, known for his electro-hopcore songs blending sensitive lyrics and poignant arrangements, returned in 2025 with a new album of high quality.
With his signature style—descriptive, humble, almost childlike, and imbued with existential questions—he lays his reflections over electro beats that skillfully blend diverse sounds: pop, techno, and dance, using digital and acoustic instrumentation and samples. The result is highly engaging and catchy without ever descending into superficial pop.
He addresses bad luck and vulnerability in ISA, the desire for an intimate escape from the race of life in KIA RIO, the will to see the world with the eyes of a child and to ignore negative influences in SISI, as well as his incessant questioning in BOOST.
In the interlude FUTUR, a voicemail from Sami Landri encourages Robert Robert to seize the moment and let go of worries. OH GOD expresses a heartfelt cry: “Can’t I just live?”, a longing for simpler times. In FMLP, the artist rejects potential help, aware of repeating the same mistakes. The downtempo track SHINE begins with anguish before a surprising transition to a breath of hope. In VICTOIRE, despite the effort to push back doubts, they linger in the other person’s mind. With Virginie B, he explores hope in the face of insecurities in POURVU, set against a backdrop of a strong electronic ballad. The instrumental LIFE IS GOING TOO FAST 4 ME evokes a breathless race toward a bright but uncertain future. Finally, TYMPAN closes the album with the image of a small mouse in a hole in the wall—fragile, discreet, yet resilient; a rodent of the future.
It is this blend of deeply sensitive, intimate reflections and rich, effective electronic music that makes Robert Robert one of the most touching male artists of his generation in Quebec.
