Founded in 2001, L.A.’s Dengue Fever began as a fairly faithful revival of the lost psych-rock sounds of pre-Khmer Rouge Cambodia, a lurid, groovy culture jam haunted by hints of historical tragedy. With each album, the sound they’ve synthesized from numerous sources (dashes of Ethiopian soul-jazz, surf and such) becomes that much more their own. From the rousing “Rom Say Sok” to the languid “Ghost Voice”, their distinctive formula shows no sign of stagnating on their most recent album.
