Peet – À demain (Top Albums 2024)

· by Jacob Langlois-Pelletier

Since his appearance at Santa Teresa in 2023, Belgian rapper, lyricist, and beatmaker Peet has never left my radar. In April, Pierre Mignon (real name) released À demain, his third career album. Spanning some 30 minutes, this project features a more mature, assertive, and calculated Peet. The essence is boom bap, but the influences are multiple, ranging from jazz to bossa nova.

The project opens with “Aster,” a track in two parts on which he brings his moods to the fore. The prod is hypnotizing; you’re thrown into a car that never stops rolling. This feeling of endless travel recurs throughout À demain. The synergy between lyrics and arrangements is the main asset of this project; Peet gets a real advantage from being at the helm of his instrumentals.

The lyrics are well-crafted, with multiple rhymes. Humour is an integral part of the Belgian’s music, and his references always find a way to make us smile. Rest assured, Peet is equally adept at tackling more serious subjects such as self-questioning, interpersonal relationships, future ambitions, and much more. It’s this duality in the tone of his lyrics and his words that makes his writing authentic and captivating. Five of the album’s ten tracks are collaborations, and each guest shines in his or her own way. Swiss nugget Ele A brings a breath of fresh air to “Leão,” and what can we say about BEN plg’s contribution to “Bonsoir”? With À demain, the Belgian artist seems to have reached another milestone in his career, offering his most accomplished project yet. We can’t wait to see what’s next for him.
