This absolutely pummeling and thrashy Los Angeles crossover hardcore EP might be the shortest eight-song EP I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. With eight songs and song names like “Inherent Violence” and “Wrought/Rot,” the EP sits at just about 10 minutes—perfect for a quick stroll or a few sets at the local gym. All these songs feel like a sledgehammer directly to the dome, and from the moment of the drums in “Bone Rake,” there is no reprieve. With riffs that sometimes remind me of old school Anthrax, Gylt smashes through each song with expert and calculating precision.
Still, Gylt is a hardcore band, so expect a few thrashy intro fake-outs that morph into a shit-kicking chaos. The vocalist, who goes by Iphigenia Sniper (amazing name), is channelling all of her pain into every cathartic scream. This EP, while short, is fully going on my heavy mix playlist, one reserved for when I need to forget the world and feel like crashing through a building.
