This past February, rapper, singer, and producer Erick The Architect, a member of the iconic New York group Flatbush Zombies and the Beast Coast collective, unveiled his debut solo album I’ve Never Been Here Before. Comprising 16 tracks, this offering is unequivocally one of the best of its kind to be unveiled this year. For his first solo project, The Architect couldn’t have chosen a more appropriate name. The MC brilliantly explores avenues they’ve never braved before, navigating through rap through rap, soul, jazz, R&B, psychedelia, and more. The soundtracks are finely constructed with finesse, and each track transports us to another universe while remaining consistent with the opus’ laid-back feel.
And what can we say about the 35-year-old’s excellent lyrics, in which he tackles themes such as vulnerability and black resilience—a true rap lesson. Throughout I’ve Never Been Here Before, Erick varies his flows, adjusts his cadence to the different productions, and relevant from start to finish. It’s during the curtain-raiser to the string of “Leukemia / AM,” “Too Much Talkin” and “Liberate” that his rapping skills are most apparent. For his first full-length, the Brooklyn native was able to count on the contributions of many renowned artists and producers and producers, including Beast Coast compatriot Joey Bada$$, funk icon George Clinton and even Britain’s James Blake. The latter is behind four tracks, including “2-3 Zone,” on which he recalls the contribution of his entourage to the success he enjoys today. Among the panoply of collaborators, RÜDE CÅT and Baby Rose stand out, combining their angelic voices for the chorus of “Breaking Point.”
